What happens after an update?

This is the first time I have gone through a major Google algo update as I am fairly new to affiliate marketing.

My site has dropped from position 5 on page 1 to position 1 on page 3 for a very competitive search term. For other search terms I have held page 1 for a couple, and a few others I have dropped down again.

SEMRush is now only reporting 16 keywords - last month it was reporting ranking positions for nearly 500. Last month (before the update anyway) it valued my search traffic at $80,000 - now it's ranking it at $18!

Should I expect this position to move about over the coming days as the algo kicks in, or is it generally once it's run that's it - that's where you are now.

I hope that moving to the top of page 3 is a position from where I can recover, I guess it could be worse but for what I do if you're not on page 1 then really there's no point.

What are your thoughts on this, is some movement after a major update normal?

Cheers

Definitely normal to experience these fluctuations. I would wait a bit to see where your site ends up lodging itself.

My sites and clients' sites are currently either unaffected or have seen minor improvement. Then I've seen some in my mastermind that have seen a huge drop from first page, then when they checked again later, they were back on first page.

    Only time will tell...

What kind of linkbuilding have you been doing, if I may ask?

    Cheers

Thanks Pat - that's put my mind at rest for a while!

To be honest I don't really participate in link building. I was ranking so well I didn't want to do anything to screw it up. At one point I was number 1 for a search term that had over 250,000 local searches a month so I didn't want to do anything to jeapordise whatever it was Google was liking about my site. I have been on page 1 for about 9 months, then bam I'm down!

As an idea, my site has 78 referring domains and 212 external backlinks, and I don't know where they've come from but it wasn't me!
