Yo all.

Need some expert advice.. i have a forex website and in between my original articles, i have started to curate links from bloomberg that i find useful for my readers.. it will consist of about 300 words and then the link to the full article at bloomberg..

will this aid in my SEO or do the opposite?

I objective is for my website to be constantly updated .. hence the curation in between new original releases ...

thanks!

Thing is, your literally redirecting your own traffic away from your site over to Bloombergs site. Kinda defeats the purpose of doing the SEO IMO.

I wouldn't be too quick to draw that conclusion.

In my experience, high quality OBLs can have the effect of boosting your SERP position.

My unqualified reasoning for this effect is that Google needs to reward good OBL's otherwise PageRank in it's original/basic form would discourage people from linking out - which in turn would diminish the value of what PageRank is measuring - also good OBLs lead to lower direct bounces back to the SERPs.

In any case, whatever the reason may be for this positive ranking effect with good OBLs (something I've measured on my own sites in many ways), moving up to a position that increases your SERP CTR generally leaves you with more internal additional pageviews than you would have otherwise had.

The more important question for OP is, will his content curation increase his search engine traffic or not?

I suspect that in the long term, the answer will depend on how much 'value adding' he does, although with the current sophistication of Google's algorithms this may not be the dominating factor right now.

My point was, why bother ranking a page that's moving traffic away from the ranked page/domain?

If traffic reads a 300 word snippet of a Bloomberg article, then you have a link trying to move traffic over to the Bloomberg domain, how's that helping monetize traffic?

Looks counterproductive to me. Your ranking a page so Bloomberg can have the traffic for free.

Hmm thanks for the opinions.. Let me further clarify my intentions .. The curation is mean to :

          1) provide value to readers as a form of additional content
          2) make the website more active in terms of content updating
          3) increase overall traffic due to the above 2 points.

I guess all in all I am just wondering is curation any good or is it just duplicating content ?

They will click on ads too. Getting something is better than getting nothing.

It shouldn't hurt you. I've seen stuff like this all the time.

I've seen a man who can swallow a sword.

The fact that I've seen this done without apparent side effects does not mean it's logical to assume that it's generally a good thing to do.

I've also seen many people park their cars in no-parking zones in the center of town on a Friday night, and later on I've seen the parking tickets on their windows.

Social proof is not the answer to everything.

You need to find a rational connection between the action and the result before you can be confident of issuing such advice.

If you knew how Google treats syndicated content, you would realize that the only thing at risk when he curates content is that the pages containing the curated text might rank poorly.

It's not going to get his entire site penalized, so there's no risk unless he does blackhat stuff with it (content curation isn't blackhat - even major news sites do it all the time).

It won't hurt your rankings, but whether or not it will help them depends on too many factors for me to explain.

In general though, more content is better than less. So if you create more content by curating other people's content, then it will probably help you more than not creating any content.
