How to check your site's rankings?

Hello warriors,

I have recently started my blogonly a few weeks ago. My Google analytics says that I have had 22 people visit through search engines, but the keywords are not defined.

I noticed that one of my posts is ranking on the first page for it's keyword, although I don't have a clue why since I don't do much SEO. I found out about this after receiving a ping-back from Google.

What I'd like to know, is there any way to look up your site's rankings? And for what keywords?

Thanks,
Maikel Michiels

You can try a service like SEMrush, but it sounds like you are getting random long-tail traffic, so even a service like that probably won't be able to help you much.

Just keep an eye on your Google Analytics and eventually you will find keywords that your site shows up for. Also install Google Webmaster Tools as well for more data about what search queries your site shows up for.

When I look it up in analytics it says keyword: (not provided). I'll try to see if there is another way to get better insights into this.

I'll take a look at SEMrush too, thanks for the suggestions

Yes, it happens when the searcher is logged in any of Google services. Then Google analytics won't show you searched keyword, instead it will show (not provided). This change took place last year.

So, if they come in through google shopping for instance? Would that hide the keywords?

SEMrush will do this "trick for you" fast and easy. Google Analytics is a cool way to see your stats, but sometimes it is not really acurate

Rank tracking tools are useless if he don't knows which keywords are actually ranking. Log into your webmasters tools account and you will find a list of ranking queries altough web master tools is pretty inaccurate usually. But at least you can collect those ranking keywords and add them on a better ran tracker to check which keywords are ranking and on which position.

You don't have much traffic (22) so I kinda doubt you have a boat load of keywords ranked.

If your running Wordpress you could use something like STT2 plugin, then only run the plugin on the WP Admin. page (not running on the live web pages), that will track the major SERPs incoming search phrases & sort the search phrases based on the number of traffic hits coming into your site/pages.

I have my STT2 plugin setup to track the last 2,500 incoming search phrases. Then manually search the highest traffic keyword phrases myself in Google Chrome Incognito + CCleaner (all free).

No matter what you use, you won't see the keyword phrases of incoming traffic If the traffic is logged into a Google account, still you can get a good idea from the incoming traffic that doesn't use a Google account.

Do you clear your cache prior to searching for your keyword?

Google will pull up the items in your cache much higher in organic rankings than if your cache is cleared.

Its a mistake a lot of people make, but it can prevent you from seeing your actual rank.

Semrush is the best website to see how your site is doing.

You can also try Alexa Ranking, but in my experience Alexa Ranking is often inaccurate.

Google Analytics show the search queries in traffic source overview. If you still cant find out the search queries then check it in Google Webmaster tools by clicking the Search Queries feature.

To check your sites rank, yes SEMrush can be very handy. You can get quick look where your site stands.
