Hi,

I built my own website from scratch (was a complete novice when I started it 8 months ago) & got it to page 1 & have been there for 4 months solid for the terms "Rockdoor" & "Rockdoors" in the UK - To get more traffic I added the terms "Composite Door" & "Composite Doors" which also got to page 1 and stayed there. Had great results up until now.

I cant decide whether I am Dancing or penalised.

Website is Rockdoor Composite doors. Installer of Rockdoors

One of my competitors downloaded some PDF's (not owned by me) from my website & placed them on their website & they have 5600 odd links pointing to my site which didn't cause me any problems previously but now they maybe as it looks so unatural.

Thoughts & comments appreciated.

Jim

I just wanted to give you indepth analysis on the site, but I just stopped when I realized that 99% of your backlinks are coming from either blog comments with the exact anchor text or from forum profiles.

Look, it's much easier when you start all over again. Get new domain, get new site (You should try wordpress this time, it's extremely user-friendly).

Now, if you have tonloads of money, create your own private network
If not.. well, then get links naturally, build awesome content - show them to other webmasters. Create informative posts about rockdoors (funny facts, history, infographics etc).

You have to get links from relevant and quality sources. In other words, contextual links from other webmasters.

Maybe it's easier, when I just point out the things you should avoid:

    1) Forum profiles
    2) Blog comments
    3) Low quality directories (auto-approval)
    4) Low quality social bookmark sites
    5) Article directories
    6) Web 2.0's (if they have only 1 article and no backlinks whatsoever)
    7) Links from extremely spammy sites

    etc...

and oh, vary you anchor text as well. This .PDF file has nothing to do with your rank drop, it's Penguin that slapped you.

    Hiya,

I agree with a couple of things...

I wouldnt ditch the domain just yet.... I would completely redesign it :-) its a good first effort but its a bit awkward on the eyes... wordpress would work well :-) (I love wordpress)

Also I clicked on a couple of pages and the content was very thing and the pages where very similar I would seriously look at getting some better or at least more indepth content...

I wouldnt go down the route of a blog network... I think that is a bit of overkill for a local site.

Your site's extremely difficult to navigate. Two sidebar based sites only work when they clearly match up and are clearly distinguished from one another. I agree with the wordpress suggestion.

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

What if someone else tries to link to your site? Even if you don't approve those links, how will Google see that? Many times, people link to your site with broken links or spammy, irrelevant links. This is something which is not in our control. Except requesting to disvow those links (and it takes weeks for Google to remove them), is there any other remedy? Will this also affect the website?

As mentioned earlier I do see a lot of links coming from blogs, while a few hold good authority they seem irrelevant to your content. Try getting some links from local places in the UK.

Also in my opinion most backlink sources will not matter, the problem is when you are not utilizing them correctly... You have to ensure you have a range of sources for your backlinks not 80% comments from blogs. I have seen sites ranked #1 where their links are scattered with irrelevant blogs but im guessing they had other good links as well from other sources. You can see me complaining about this yesterday.

I just searched 'rockdoors uk' (without quotes) and I see your site on page 1 in position #9.

      -

      Roger that.

      He's still on first page.

Onsite does need a bit of work to get authority back though..

      Here's my advice:

      1. This is a landing page - so what's missing then? A call back form.. Add that above the fold or near the fold.
      2. Get rid of the onpage anchor text links that are keyword laden.. THIS IS NOT NECESSARY.
      3. Don't keyword stuff the page - this is pointless and unnecessary. Vary the keywords.. VARY.
      4. Take the full stop out of the title tag and replace with a dash or something else.
      5. The "to get a quote" part at the bottom - see advice one.
      6. "Look how many we have fitted here" - Create a blog here. Blog about your fittings, this will add more pages and make the site more content rich.
      7. Check out your competitors - why are they ranking ahead? What can you do onsite/offsite and in your business to become better than them?

      Good luck.

You're #8 for "rockdoors uk" (without quotes), for me in the US. BTW, I don't like Wordpress. Doesn't look professional unless you're doing a news site. It's the lazy way to go.
