Question about keyword research data

I'm wondering if anyone can help me figure this out...

I hired someone on fiverr to do some keyword research for me and I want to learn how to do the kind of research that he did myself.

His report was in spreadsheet format that includes eight columns.

Those columns are:
1. Keyword
2. Global
3. Local
4. CPC (CPC = Cost per click in AdWords)
5. OCI (OCI = Online Commercial Intent; how profitable a keyword is online.)
6. Results (meaning the number of pages indexed in Google for each particular keyword)
7. Top Links (Top Links = # of backlinks of top competitor)
8. Difficulty

Does anyone know what software he could be using to get that data? Or if there are some free tools that I can use to get that data?

I know that I can get some of that data from the Google Adwords Keyword Tool (the one at: https://adwords.google.com/o/KeywordToo), but not the OCI data, the Results data, the Top Links data, and the Difficulty data (at least not that I could figure out).

The most important data I'm trying to get are the keywords, the monthly global search volume, the monthly local search volume, and the results (meaning the number of pages indexed in Google for each particular keyword). I already know how to get the data for the keywords, the monthly global search volume, and the monthly local search volume, so the real "stumper" is getting the data for the results.

Any ideas about how to get this data (other than manually doing a search on each keyword in Google and looking at the number of search results for each keyword)?

Thanks,

Aaron

    That looks like Market Samurai.

I suggest to use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

Market Samurai is very often recommended by people that think they can earn a nice affiliate commission. I think the data is rather questionable.

My math teacher used to say: "I only trust the statistics that I personally tweaked".

In the case of Market Samurai the presentation of data is very nice - the source of the data is unknown. That makes the whole thing rather questionable. I would not invest my time and money on some kind of finding that comes out of a black box type of operation.

I agree. I tried to use it but I could do what it does by hand quicker, with more accurate results.

    Hi Aaron,

As you know, the bulk of this data comes from the Google keyword tool.

As for the information which doesn't come directly from the tool, some of it it is probably derived from information which is in the tool.

For example, how profitable a keyword is online. This information doesn't exist as fact anywhere, but we can hazard a guess at it by making an assumption that our website (if it's put together in the right way) might attract a small percentage (x) of the monthly search volume. Of that small percentage, a small percentage (y) might actually, for example, click on an adsense ad. If they do then Google will give us a small percentage (z) of the CPC. So we have a formula like:

    Monthly profitability = x% of monthly searches * y % * z% of CPC

This is as good an approximation as any of the potential profitablity of a keyword. But remember, it is just giving us an idea.

Where the backlinks information comes from is an interesting question. A few years ago Yahoo site explorer was often used to get an idea of backlinks (as Google tends to under-report) but this service has now closed. It would be interesting to know what the person you hired (or his software) is doing.

"Difficulty" is a subjective judgement, but we could base it on a combination of the page rank of the top few sites returned by Google for a given keyword, the number of backlinks, how well the top few sites are constructed e.g. do they have the keyword in the html title tag and so on. Again, we could come up with a formula based on these factors and give a value to the difficulty. The important thing to remember is that none of this is absolute and can only be a guide.

    Hope that helps,
    Dave

Many thanks Ankit for the link to Keyword Research - The Advanced Guide to SEO.

Can you recommend anyone to provide highly accurate OCI keyword research along the lines of what's detailed in this discussion, for some clients with very small budgets? Thanks in advance for your time.

Market Samurai is also based on Google Adwords keyword tool..

So you should use Google Adwords Keyword tool so you can easily understand, as Market Samurai has some terms which is hard to understand for newbies, and Market Samurai is for companies, who work at larger level..

For few keywords, 10 to 100, you should use Google Adwords Keyword Tool.
