It has nothing to do with SEO .... .com is just more popular, that is all...

You can very well build a large successful business with a .net, .biz, .us, .info and etc ....

hmmmm someone just told me dot com is the best for seo. I am trying to register a domain name in a niche I am trying to get into but unfortunately all the brandable and short domain names are taken but there are so many dot nets.

      Anyone else?

Don't listen to them ... I have many websites and domain names and they range from .com , .net, .info It is not the domain name extension that matters, it is the marketing you do on the site...

Your best bet is to register .com and .net with the same domain

Yea, dot com might be better for recognition by people (though not always), but it makes absolutely no difference in terms of seo.

If I were you I would do a search on the forum. These questions come up time and time again. You will probably find more detailed answers by searching.

Personally, I go for the .com suffix, because it is the one that people tend to remember and type into their browsers. Where appropriate, I buy the .net and others too.

If the name that you want is gone, then be creative and find another. It happens to me all the time!

As far as the search engines are concerned there are different opinions on which suffixes are likely to rank higher. The opinions of the 'experts' however, seem to indicate that the relevance of your domain (containing one or more of your keywords) to your website, is more important to your SE rankings than your actual suffix.

Just my limited understanding of the subject.

      Regards,
      Jeff.

In user's view, dot com is what most people like to search when comes to business. Though it might change in time.

As for SEO, I believe it will actually depending on your website content. If you build a good quality content website for visitors, then it will be likely to do great with SEO. But if it is not quality content for visitors then it might not be that successful.

For SEO, I do believe it will be dependent on quality content, linking, etc and not base on whether dot com or dot net.

I agree with most of what is quoted above. The suffix doesn't matter at all from an SEO standpoint. There are some searches that will return a .info domain on the first page of Google. I have never read anything regarding SEO that says the TLD matters. The TLD is only important for helping people remember your domain name and what you're about (i.e. com for commerce, net for network, org for organization, gov for government, etc.).

COM or NET is nothing related with SEO...its only for popularity, COM more popular. SEO depends on your article, backlinks, PR, aged, etc...

    Hey Yommys:

If you're talking SEO, a 3 or 4 word domain is fine. Whats more important is choosing a name that is exactly one of the keywords you're targeting.

This is good to hear. I would have preferred a .com for my new domain name, but opted for .net as the .com was taken.

for my experiences, .org is the best, even better than .com.
If your keyword phase is taken, try to put a hypen (-) in between the phase, this is the trick most experience one used. Seems that domain with - in bet the phase doesnt make any different than those without - .

Give the above a try, it works for me

      Hi Yommy,

I will add a small tip. If you want the name to stand out, but don't need people to have to type in the name, because your SEO is mainly Link dependent, then try Hyphens -hyphens (or dash) between words in your domain name. like www.yeast-infections-during-pregnancy.com

      One more tip,

When you pick a domain, buy at least the .com, .net and .org, because when you become successful and are SEO'd, people will want to piggyback off your success.

A good Source to buy right now- GoDaddy

They offer a deal. When you buy the .com, you can add .net and .org and .info and get all four domain names for under 26.00 for a year.
      That's 4 domains

Now, don't host on GoDaddy, unless your experienced on setups, Try HostGator for $9 per month.

      Ok, Yommy.....

Thanks for the advise, I am avoiding anything that has got to do with hypens at the moment.

Still can't find a good dot com domain name but is yeastinfectionsduringpregnancyhub.com a good one ?

SEO is more about content and not tld (top level domain). COM and NET will perform the same way with the same content. It is just that people remember COM domains better. So, if you are primarily targeting on search engine traffic, tlds don't matter.

Well, the underlying concept of SEO is to bring you traffic...right?

So, in this respect, .com works well as compared to .net so you can say .com is slightly preferred over .net but not because of its SEO value but rather its potential to bring you more traffic.

This dot com and dot net are not that important for SEO but remember this don't the dot net version of a dot com site. example: Domain.com is taken and Domain.net is not. Don't get it the domain. People tend to remember dot Com websites more than any other else.

But the domain name should always be SEO. Before getting a domain name always check the words are getting traffic.

    Just my 2 cents.

I think its always best to get the dot com version because it's more widely known. I prefer to enter the domain and press CTRL + ENTER to autofill the www and dot com so that's why I always prefer to buy the dot com.

I have both .com and .net and .co.uk - It does not seem to make a difference which one ends with. SEO is really determined by what the content is on each site. Some of my .com sites do less than .net and .co.uk so in answer to your question - it does not matter.

Hope this id useful to you.

Your TLD has nothing to do with SEO. People will go to .com's more often than other sites but overall - if you build a brand you can have any domain you want, just gotta build the brand.

    Just a sidenote:

Your TLD is somewhat relevant, when you are geo targeting. IE: It is always a hell of alot easier to rank a .com.au site in Australia, than a .com.

Especially if your backlinks are mainly from the same region.

If you are geo targeting, it may also serve you well to host within the given nation.

The TLD has very little influence on SEO.

The TLD can have has some impact if you have a target market in mind, for example, for an international/US market .com is preferable, but for a UK market, .co.uk is better.

SEO aside, if the .com is available I would choose that for a number of reasons. However, if you have the exact keyword for your domain available as a .net but not .com, then the .net is a good choice. I would not spend too long overthinking it either
