Redesign a site with SEO in mind

I built my main site and it's not very snazzy, cuz I'm an amateur, lol. But, the site has worked. (Almost all text.) It's five years old.
I need/want to pretty it up; a good-looking site would build more trust, I think. I am fearful of changing the content, so, I don't know how to go about this. Can anyone recommend someone who can redesign a site, pretty it up, and not mess up my SERP? I have more than one that need to be done but my main one is biggest concern.
Or could I just get any good web designer to do this and I could dump the content into the redesign shell he makes?
