Link Building Secrets That Will Rock Your Rankings (Interview)

I did an interview at InternetMarketing.com the other day and dropped A LOT of golden nuggets:

Link Building Secrets That Will Rock Your Rankings with Brian Dean

I'm posting the link here because there are a lot of Warriors that will get some value from the video.

In case you're too busy to watch the entire video, here's the highlight reel:

In Brian’s first 2-years in the search engine optimization game he got “slapped” and lost rankings more times then he could count. Here are some highlights from the interview and 3 techniques he uses to build powerful links.

Forget Microsites – Build Authority Sites

Forget micro-sites (1-10 page website). Focus all your time, money and resources on building 1 authority site at a time.

Sure, life is good when you have 10 microsites ranking on top of Google but when when your rankings drop your problems are amplified 10X.

LESSON : It’s no more risky to have 1 big site than dozens of little sites. Plus, when your site gets authority status, ranking for your keywords becomes easier.

The One Thing That Makes Link Building Easier?
How is your content going to stand out from billions of pages found online? It’s not creating good content. It’s creating awe inspiring content that’s dripping with value.

In our interview Brian reveals the successful online entrepreneur who goes so far as to routinely spends $50,000 to create a single web post so definitive, so undeniably impressive and awe inspiring that it sends shock waves of envy through his niche and attracts links like a tractor beam and shower him with web traffic.

LESSON : Go beyond good content – aim for breathtaking. (Check out the next tip – The Skyscraper Backlink Technique That Guarantees You’ll Get Quality Links)

The Skyscraper Technique To Attract Quality Links

This technique virtually guarantees that you’ll attract the kind of backlinks you need to rank for any keyword you want.
Step 1: Find link-worthy content
Step 2: Create content that’s even better
Step 3: Contact the right sites in your niche.

Brian claims the success of this technique is basic human psychology.
Have you ever walked by a really tall building and said to yourself, “Wow, that’s amazing! I wonder how big the 8th tallest building in the world is.”
What you’re going to do is finding the tallest “skyscraper” in your space…and slapping 20 stories to the top of it. It’s human nature to be attracted to the best.
Watch the interview for more detail on the Skyscraper Technique.
LESSON : Find out what works and make it better – then hustle.

Social Signals – The Shocking Truth

Google has invested billions of dollars developing a search ranking algorithm based on the number of quality, relevant links going to a page.
Yes, Google is starting to factor social signals like Tweets, Facebook likes, pins, Google Plus into consideration. But if think they’re going to scrap billions in research and development to build a new algo based on data they don’t have 100% access to … well… that’s naive.

LESSON : Stick with building links for now and the near future.
Linkerati – Who Are They & How Do They Help You Rank?
In every niche there is a group of people who’re most likely to put a link to your page on their site – they’re link happy – aka the linkerati.

Brian’s approach is to always start your link building campaign by finding your niche’s linkerati, figure out what they like to link to and go above and beyond to create content they can’t help but link to.

LESSON
: Focus on the link power-brokers.

Build It And They Will Come is a Myth.

Many pseudo-experts mistakenly preach that if you create great content the traffic will come. It’s a fairytale.

Creating killer content is not even half the battle in the SEO game. Smart marketers like Derek Halpern of Social Triggers spend 20% of their time creating content and 80% hustling for links, guest posts and tapping into other people’s subscriber lists.
“Here’s the deal: When you run a blog that has a few readers, adding more content doesn’t help you get more readers. The math just doesn’t work. Let’s say you have 100 readers. What are the chances that one of those people will love your content so much that they tell ALL of their friends about it? 1%? 2%? If that?” – Derek Halpern
LESSON : Blog less – promote more. You don’t have to be a content creation maniac to rank well.
“If you had a gun to your head and needed to rank fast, what link tactic would you use?”

Brian’s response without hesitation was – Infographics. Here’s his approach:
1. Research the kind of content the linkerati or linking to by going to Google and searching your target keyword.
2. Ignore results from authority sites like CNN, WebMD, Huffington, etc.. because they have an unfair ranking advantage.
You want to focus on pages created by Joe Average bloggers because it’s the content the linkerati are linking to.
3. Look for the opportunity.
Is the page outdated, missing critical information, an incomplete list, could it use more detailed instructions, attractive graphic design?

LESSON : Infographics are powerful link magnets.
In our video interview Brian reveals the 1 sneaky trick he uses in his link attracking infographics that dramatically increases the odds of authority sites giving him a backlink.

Broken Link Building Technique

Broken links on other people’s sites can be a backlink goldmine.
1. Identify a site you want a link from.
2. Find broken links on the site
3. Email the site informing them of the broken link and forward a page on your site that would be a suitable replacement for the broken link.

LESSON : Sites that are already linking will link again.

The Most Underutilized Link Building Tool – Email

I get at least 1 email every day with someone asking me for a link and I ignore them unless they’re looking to sponsor the site.
So I thought I’d seen every email approach in the book until Brian shared his 3-step email formula that increases his odds of getting an authority site to link to him by 200%.

Remember, the previous lesson – spend 20% of your time creating content and 80% hustling links and promoting your content. Email is the tool you use in the hustle.

Watch the video to learn the exact 3-step email formula Brian uses to get authority sites linking to him.
LESSON : Emailing people and begging for a link has a low success ratio and is annoying. If you’re going to do it, do it right.

And if you have a question, feel free to post in this thread and I'll get right to it

Thanks Brian, that's some pretty amazing stuff that you're giving away. Particularly considering some of the crappy content you get in some paid for SEO related WSOs.

I hope enough people pick up on this and realise how useful (and original) your tips are.

Many people would have sold it as a WSO indeed, however the exposure would've been so much less when he would've chosen that route.

With all the money invested to create this I think he took the right approach by making it free available to everyone and get it featured at huge sites.

    Brian,
I've watched that video end to end. Even to the point where I told my Wife to piss off from interrupting me.

    Excellent...Excellent...Excellent.

It's very rare to see some original thought appear when it comes to link building and SEO (except from me of course jk ).

And almost never would you see someone wiling to share his proven concepts for free. Respect to you, and a toast to your undoubted future success in the Industry.

Thanks Kevin. I'm a BIG believer in giving way great content for free. If you look at some of the most successful sites in the SEO space: Moz, QuickSprout etc., you notice that they give away solid gold content on a weekly basis.

Sure, I probably could have packed this up at a $7 WSO with a $27 OTO, but everyone gets more out of the work (including me) when it's given away.

Really like these tips. My favorite is this part:

The Skyscraper Technique To Attract Quality Links
This technique virtually guarantees that you'll attract the kind of backlinks you need to rank for any keyword you want.
    Step 1: Find link-worthy content
Step 2: Create content that's even better
Step 3: Contact the right sites in your niche.
One thing that I like to do is look at what the top5 results are saying about my keyword, and then I'll create an article/page/whatever based around that the top 5 sites are talking about. Because obviously Google thinks those are the most relevant...and what people want! Combine facts/info from the top 5 sites, and then ADD YOUR OWN info based on research you have done on the kw to make it unique and stand out. It helps too to see how people are talking about your keyword on FB, in Forums, and on Youtube too....cause then you can see what they really want and not what you think they want.

So say, someone is looking for a "fondue pot", and the top 5 results in Google are selling stainless steel (silver) Cuisineart fondue pots, you'd add all 5 to your website....and then something extra! Maybe you'll add a yellow or red one because yellow and red ones are hard to find....or you'll offer them one where they can buy a fondue pot, but if they buy now they can get a fork set for free or something.... The point is to go above and beyond what everyone in the top 5 results are doing...so you will keep the customer interested...and even if they don't buy this time, they may come back because you were different and memorable from all the rest...

      Good stuff.

It's basically a "content gap": filling in the shortcomings in the content that's already out there.

That's why I like to create ultimate guides: you're automatically the go-to source on that keyword/topic as soon as you press "publish".

I wanted to swing back around to this thread and make an update. When I had implemented one of the Golden Nuggets to be found in the video.

See, I'm not a Web Designer, Not my bag at all. Its only this year I have actually got into building and owning sites of my own. After so many years of working for other peoples rankings. I thought now is the time. Anyway thats another story.
Point is, I rank sites, I just can't make them look pretty.

The market I am in, is a very Technical one with lots of Sciencey stuff. So the content to be found on competitors websites and of course my own. Can be quite boring. It seemed that all of my competitors where strictly writing for Search Engines with massive walls of text.

So I thought about implementing, the SkyScraper Method on some of my pages.
I scraped up about 30 of the top keywords for one of my products. And created a single page, in bullet type format of a Q&A site. Making mini bullet point posts of important Dates and Events surrounding each product.
Its History, Public Citations, Whatever you can think of.
But I created the page so that the basic format and layout. Will fall into place universally for every Product promoted on the site.

The site itself is 30+ pages.
I have implemented the new Skyscraper copy on 3 pages so far.
    My traffic has increased 20%
My Bounce Rate has Decreased by 25%
    My Sales commissions have Doubled
These 3 Pages are money machines.

My pages will all soon become 3000+ words of Awesomeness!!!!

    Thanks Bro

    BTW
I did debate whether to go with the whole infographic concept. But like I said before, Web Design is all very new to me. I was happy enough to pay for quality. And I may even go that far in the future development of the site.

I can simply make additions to the pages as time goes by. The Q&A format can be easily manipulated into Sub-pages/Infographics within the Text based content. Or vice versa.

But if you are on a budget, or just on the fence on whether to takes the financial plunge with infographics. Doing the Skyscraper method in "Pretty" text format, with a clever use of images. Can work just as well.

I feel like I'm building, million $$$ pages. Its mad, when you get excited about reading your own content, you know your doing it the right way.

I never understood why that myth is so damn persistent. Maybe because it's because our posting schedule is one of the few things 100% under are control.

But it doesn't make sense that Google would prefer sites that post often. There are plenty of autoblogs that post multiple times per day. And I don't think Google gives them any boost for that.

    This is great stuff.

I had the mentality that I had to write 2 blog posts a day. Instead I am going to focus on quality.

However, im still not totally sure what awesome quality content is. For example, lets say your site is about mountain bikes what sort of content would you focus on?

Would you write about mountain bike tournaments or the technicalities behind gears?

I know how that myth started... Remember when Google announced (or implemented) the "Freshness" update back in the day? (It's been so long ago I can't really remember the name if it had one).

It was basically designed to give better search results for timely news and events, like if you did a search for "superbowl odds" you would get the odds of the current Superbowl instead of the page that used to pop up from 8 years ago.

Then the "forum people" heard the word "freshness" without reading or understanding the whole update and created their own 'freshness theory' thinking it was about time of recent post. Not a bad theory, but not what the update intended and then word spread like an STD through humptown.

Good content is good content, regardless of when it was published and that is what Google is looking for. ( I mean GREAT content! )

I agree: that must be what it was. I remember when I first got into SEO I used to post every other day because I misinterpreted this update.

Then I saw pages on sites that hadn't been updated in MONTHS outranking me and it made me wonder...

Now I only add a post once a month or so. But when I do I make sure it's AWESOME.

Good question. It can come in many different forms.

I talk a bit about how to find content that has a track record of success that you can reverse engineer in the interview and here:

I also discuss some of the types of content that tends to generate the most amount of links at Moz:

    Yes Greg, I agree.

I also think it's a myth perpetuated by AutoBlog software vendors (like Brian mentioned).

This is a very common practise. Remember how the bottled water manufacturers came up with the theory that you need at least 2 litres of water every day?

Google is so simple but in the quest of trying to "game" the system, we've made it complex.

    Thanks backlinko,

This is great stuff. I thought it was all about quantity.

When you emailed the 160 emails I take you manually got the email address and manually change the site name. That must have been very time consuming but worth it?

Also how do I find broken links on peoples sites?

(I will have hundreds of questions, this advice is fantastic.)

      Glad you liked it.

Yes, I changed the site name and found the webmaster's name (whenever possible) to include in the email.

Yup, it's time consuming but definitely worth it. Sending out generic emails doesn't have the same effect: each one needs to be personalized.

I have to say this. That interview has some really good stuff in it. I almost didnt watch it but glad I did. Just wanted to say thanks to Brian for sharing it here. The way you explain your techniques are awesome.

Because the techniques are on a forum now, you think they will still work?
Had to add that. I cant agree more with what you said about ninty, whatever percent of what you read on forums

    Great stuff

      Good question.

Fortunately, most of the techniques I describe are too work/labor/skill intensive for most people to do. Which is good because it means there's a large barrier to entry.

Plus, the techniques I'm talking about aren't anything Google would WANT to devalue: we're talking about publishing great content and getting the word out.

That's as white hat as it gets.

They most certainly are not the fast and easy techniques that most seem to want that have no results. Great results come from hard work. Your creative ways though, just make it easier. Most probably wont put forth the effort though. Those that do, well it will be worth it.

I wasnt going to say this but, in the past when I read your posts, I thought to myself, WOW, this is some smart kid, he knows his stuff. Your profile pic gave me the impression you were like 19 maybe 20.

I'll take that as a compliment. I was 27 when that picture was taken (in Kyoto). I'm pushing 30 now

Wow. This was very informative--that's the good news. The bad news: so much more to learn about this. Bottomline: as you suggest, getting the right traffic through getting good links takes a lot of time. Sigh....but thank you.
