Why do I need to use proxies?

I always read the term proxy servers and such, I have to admit i have no clue what they are used for. Can some one explain the importance of proxies to me?

    Mostly for IM tools.

    Proxies are essential if you're doing a lot of harvesting in Google, PR checks, etc. They're quick to flag your IP and temporarily block it.

    It is about showing different IP address...if you are residing in international country and you want to use IP address of USA then proxy would help you..

    If you're a spammer you need to keep changing IP addresses because they get banned from services. That's why you need 'fresh unbanned' ones all the time.

    Since you don't know what they are, your heart is not in spamming - so find a different pasttime
