You could lose your rankings for a keyword that your site got almost all of the traffic. Just be sure to check with Google Analytics or any other tool which keyword was the most used for your website and try to get your rank back! Build some high PR and high Authority backlinks like Guest blogging, Social Bookmarking sites, etc. and you would get it back soon!

You could do SEO & rank the pages that were ranked before you lost traffic.

Try social media marketing. Also you may have lost traffic because your site was designed wrong.

There was also a torrent of Google updates last month.

It may not have anything to do with your site's update.

    What is your site url?

Well, you also have to check if your domain name is penalized or not.

Google always updates its algorithm, so nothing to worry but do check with Google webmaster tool to see if you are penalized. Also diverse your traffic strategy! Don't just use SEO! Once your website lost ranking, you loose everything.

Use social media, participate in related forums, write blogs etc... SEO is just a method of getting traffic, and it is not all!

As usual, Google decides to shake things up.

You'll just need to check the results after a week or so to see if any of your SEO is still in tact, if not you'll have to build up again where gaps have been left - and work in other areas outside of SEO such as being social.

My sites and my clients sites are always waving up and down in search engine results due to Google and their changes - I have learnt to not worry about it and just diagnose the problem and carry on.

Please clarify. Are you getting less traffic or did your rankings drop?
if you updated your website did the pages/ pagenames url's change ? do you have redirects in place for no longer existing pages?

Wasn't planning to post - usually I am only lurking here.

This exactly same thing happened to me TWICE. First redesign was in June 2012 - 50 percent traffic loss. Waited for many months to bounce back but it never happened. Then I redesigned site again in May 2013 and lost 50 percent more. I know about SEO, I kept navigation and links. There was nothing black or even grey hat. I simply buy traffic now. While this can be costly, it is very refreshing to have control over your traffic.

The irony is that my first redesign was meant to improve user experience and make it responsive. These things simply don't pay off these days.
