Conundrum of Keywords -- Broadly exacted

HI Folks
Need some wisdom about keywords, which I already thought I knew about.

I have a keyword that even in broad match has very low competition
focus groups in LA broad is over 200,000

but the exact match is a pitiful 38 searches.

I have been so conditioned to looking at exact match that I never look at broad. Now for safety's sake I bought the domain for this.

I'm thinking that even if it has low competition at 200,000 Broad and 38 EXACT It's a little jewel in the rough.

I'm looking for any thoughts here. I've never encountered this before.

From what I read and know (but I don't find the exact article now), the exact/broad is better when it's higher (your kw is 38/200,000 which is very small) which means that most of the people are looking for the exact match (I am not sure that i sucssed to explain...)

Anyway, if you bought the domain already, give it a shot. The majority of the traffic is from long tail kw's and not the main kw.

You can read an opinion here:

    I hope it helps :-)

I had read somewhere that, from the next update, Google won't give much Importance to Exact Match Domains, is that correct?

Exact match is what matters. Broad match is pretty much useless.

Say your keyword is blue widgets. That means any search performed with the words blue and widgets in it, in any order and with any additional words surrounding them, count towards the broad search data.

    blue widgets
where can I but blue widgets?
    widgets
    that are blue
are blue or red widgets better?
I pissed off my girlfriend and now my widgets are black and blue

all of these searches would contribute to the broad search numbers.

    blue widgets
    "blue widgets"

are the only two search strings that contribute to the exact match numbers. That is what you want to go off of.

Broad match could be damn near anything people are searching for.

      This.

I know it's exciting to see a big @$$ number next to search results with low competition but it will not make you money. Don't let your emotions get in the way of good keyword research!

Haha!! You know this is funny!
For years and years I've only looked at exact match. ONLY. Bought domains, etc. The way we all do.

I have used MicroNicheFinder for years, and it's been an old faithful hound dog.

So recently I was talking to a colleague who does this stuff, and he did a quick search for competitor keywords while we were on the phone and found that a keyword that I had totally missed, but would be logical for the market was right there in His keyword tool.

In that moment I lost faith in what I knew, and whether MicroNicheFinder was somehow off.

Then when I did the search I saw that it was broad match. 210000 searches, but when you went to exact it went to 38. It literally DISAPPEARED off the results in MNF because I filter out anything below 300 local searches.

I thought "Jesus, have I been doing this wrong all the while?"

I've learned a sad truth in this business, which is akin to what they teach in MLM businesses. You NEVER tell people what you are actually earning. But you always inflate it and inflate what you know to keep up appearances.

Thank you all for reaffirming that my understanding of best practices for exact match is still right.

        M
