Newbie Question About Link Diversity

Okay, I'm new to the forum here and have couple of questions about link diversity. My site got punished after Penguin 2.0, traffic dropped to about half of what is was before the update. My question is this does link diversity apply on a domain level only or can you also be penalized on a page by page basis? To go along with that question is there a free tool that can examine all your links and tell you where you need to diversify?

'Link diversity' is an imaginary concept sold to you by people who market 'link building tools.'

It has no real world application and doesn't even really make logical sense. Why build links in the first place and then 'dilute' you efforts by adding 'click here' links?

Once you've been punished by Penguin 2.0, it's highly unlikely you'll recover your domain - especially using the same tactics that got you penalized in the first place.

Your best bet is to get a new domain, and go again. You can simply move your content to a new domain, so no worries there. Then you can begin promoting your website again, but slow down on whatever linking you did that just got this website penalized.

That's the thing I wasn't really using any tactics just building links manually inserting my link in the context of whatever I was posting. My main idea was just to promote the site where ever I could. I got up to 100 UVs a day but after Penguin 2.0 I'm down to 40-50. I have not been blasting links at my site I only have about 700 links total.

Penguin doesn't care if you blast or not. The main thing that algo seems to be aimed at is 'too good to be true' or over-optimized anchor text.

Honestly, you aren't doing that bad if you still have half the traffic. Are you sure you were actually hit by Penguin or have you lost backlinks? If you have relatively few links and you lose one, it would explain a drop like this.

I have been losing links as well but there was a steep drop off on the day that Penguin 2.0 went live. Most of the links lost are from Technorati I think they have changed the way they link out resulting in less links.

How many indexed pages does this site have? How old is the domain?

About 200 pages indexed on Google right now it's a WP blog that I transferred over from a blogspot blog, the domain is a year old. The actual content goes back like two years.

I'm not sure what tracking program you're using but if it has historical data I'd check to see exactly which pages dropped and by how much. On one site that I had one page dropped for multiple terms and I was able to deduce that the anchor text had been devalued pretty bad by Penguin 2.0.

I think your site is in the same boat. You probably have suffered from link devaluation only. Analyze which pages had the drop and strengthen up. It's worth an edit to bulk up the onpage. I don't know what your subject matter is, but I'd start using Facebook and G+ to promote it. You can easily get way more than those 50 people you lost doing that.

After talking to you, I say don't dump this domain because it's not hurting that bad. To improve the health, add a few signals other than backlinks to tell Google (and the world) the site is worthy of the rankings.

Yeah, I can pick some of the traffic back up with my Twitter account my G+ and Facebook pages are pretty dead though maybe it's time to start getting more active on those.

Just to give you some motivation.

Yesterday I sent 8,941 people to my websites from 6 Facebook Fan Pages and another 412 from Google+. Don't forget StumbleUpon, Reddit, and Twitter too.

So let me ask, did you use facebook ads to get those fans?

I dropped about $125 on ads early on and then snowballed them into huge followings. Once you have a few thousands REAL likes things start to happen very fast.

Not a bad ROI at all. I hear lately that the best way to go is CPM to your own fan page but you need to also have a high converting ad and fan page or else it's a waste of time.

Try to diversify your anchor text. Use more branded than commercial. Over 60% of your anchor text should be commercial (e.g. - Company Name, Click here, View Website, Learn More, www.yourdomain.com, etc.)
