The 'Rules' Surrounding Targeting Brands

Hi,

I have been using Google Keyword Tool quite extensively and it is suprising how popular some brands are with low competition. For example:

Sony - 135,000
Sennheiser - 33,000
Samsung - 365,000
Kindle Books - 60,500

These are all exact searches with low competition.

Is it possible to target these keywords or am I barking up the wrong tree completely?

  • Justlukeyou,

Keep in mind that competition as displayed by the Google keyword tool refers to competition in AdWords and not the web as a whole. For example when you search for the word sony in quotations in Google, there are almost 2 billion results. That doesn’t sound like low competition to me.

If you already knew that and you are planning on competing for these terms in AdWords, there is another road block. Trademarked terms are difficult to use if you aren’t the trademark owner in AdWords. Even legitimate resellers of certain brands have a hard time getting around this and must provide evidence of their relationship with the brand.

    Hope that helps,

    Shawn

What would you do if you optimize the word 'sony'? What kind of information would you provide on the web page, would you get permission from Sony or without permission? Did you think of legal things too?
