Backlinks fallen off a cliff

I have a relatively new site 3 months old, competing in a difficult niche. Over the last couple of weeks, a few keywords have been coming through - showing in webmaster tools between position 70 and 200. Good progress - or so I thought.

On the 11th of July, it seems that backlinks relating to any "payday" keyword fell off a cliff. Search queries identified via webmaster tools simply stopped that day, although some relating to my site name still rank.

I looked at my backlink data and discovered that a number of links were discovered on the 11th July - all to one site. I recently subscribed to what I thought was a legit business directory, however it seems that the site has spawned over 10,000 backlinks to my site.

Obviously I can do things to have them removed, but the question I have as a relative SEO newbie is simply, would Google penalise my site straight away on discovering these links (i.e. found on the 11th July, penalised on the 11th July), or would it take longer for the penalty to kick in?

If the answer to the above is no, it would take longer, it could be to do with the recent payday reshuffle, however I'm sure that many SEO experts here will also tell me to remove the site links anyway.

Any advice appreciated.

    Hi,

Whether you get penalised or not you should get rid of those links. It will create a huge spike in your backlink profile naturally so get shot of them.

I would attempt to contact the webmaster and get rid of the links (maybe it is a loop in their coding which is automatically generating pages which your link is on so they may not even know about the error. Avoid most directories going forward. We've seen that they've been hit badly.

If you can't get rid of the links then disavow the whole domain in GWT.

    Hope this helps.

Horrible advice. Listen to none of this.

The directory you added your site to probably just had some plugin to show recent additions to the directory. Those often show up on nearly every page. That's why you had the big spike in links. As more sites are added and the site is crawled again they will drop off.

Spikes in links are nothing to worry about. That's how most links profiles are built.

WMT has never shown all the backlinks, so just because you see a lower backlink count in WMT doesn't really mean much of anything. Besides WMT is very slow about updating their data.

Did you see any benefit in your rankings after listing in the business directory

Mike is right, some directories have the latest links added show up on all of the pages.

I have also seen some directories that sell "premium" links which are essentially sidebar links and all of the pages then have your link.

Just visit the website, does every page still have your link? If so I'd ask to have that sitewide sidebar link removed and just have a normal directory link if any at all.
