SEO... Keywords... Help! Its Making my head spin!

OK For the last 2 hours I have been looking for an explanation on keywords and I've read so much my head is spinning

I want to know if I have this right or not....

Say I have a Cooking Blog that I just started and put up 15 entries, I've been promoting the site now that it has some content (Since I waited until I had 15 by choice)

Now I want to "target" and I go to keyword tool and look up, Best Carolina BBQ sauce Recipe... Low Comp ... 500 global ... and 175 Local

So I now got to my Blog and I Freshly Write an Article/Entry Titled

"This is the Best Carolina BBQ sauce Recipe Ever!"

Then in my post mention "Best Carolina BBQ sauce Recipe" maybe 2 or 3 more times. and publish.

Continue to promote my blog and drive traffic to it.

Once Google or other Search Engines indexes my Blog again, I Will the be in the running to "Rank for the Keyword "Best Carolina BBQ sauce Recipe"?

2 Days later, Do it All over again with another Keyword? Or Maybe Write Another UNIQUE entry with "Best Carolina BBQ sauce Recipe"?

This is obvious Just an example, but I just cant grasp what exactly to do with a "keyword" once I find one related and I like and low in Googles Keyword tool!

If I'm Wrong, Can Somebody please Correct me, Or at least tell me that my 2 hours of research paid off! Thanks

Ha, you have completed the first step with the article and title dont worry. Now you should get backlinks to your article and site with the keyword "Best Carolina BBQ sauce Recipe" as the anchor text. make sure you vary your anchor text though. So have 20 percen or so of the backlinks saying Best Carolina BBQ sauce Recipe, and the rest should be things like

    domainname.com
varitions of the keyword (carolina sauce recipe)

Basic reply but should do some good.

The competition level in the keyword tool has nothing to do with SEO. It is the level of competition among AdWords advertisers. Doesn't mean squat for how hard it is to rank.

In fact, you could use the opposite and ignore low competition keywords in a lot of cases. If advertisers are not bidding on the keyword, that often can be a sign that there is no money to be made with that keyword.

I wouldn't get too caught up on the details of SEO. So long as you are creating articles that are useful and easy to read and creating backlinks from a variety of sources (eg: Youtube, relevant forums, social sharing sites etc), then it should all help your ranking.

Just focusing on high quality useful content that will benefit your readers is the best thing you can do to get ranked in Google search now. With so many webmasters feeling the sting from Penguin 2.0, it's not really safe to do any kind of massive backlinking campaign. If you do backlinking, then get a few higher quality backlinks from reputable food and recipe related sites, linking to specific posts, in addition to the homepage. Consider doing a guest post on a related high PR blog for this purpose.
