Buying a high PR domain

Ok, I see a PR4 domain for sale, but it has few backlinks to support that PR4. So if I was to buy it, what should I do to maintain that status? Without spending a whole lot of money.

Would anyone be interested in guest blogging to help me fill out the site?

If it does not have the backlinks to support the PR, I would not buy it. That means it already is no longer a PR 4, you just cannot see that until Google updates the toolbar PR.

You would be wasting your money. And there is nothing you can do to maintain the PR. PR comes from backlinks, nothing else. If the backlinks are not there, neither is the PR.

That's right. I understand your interest in "filling out the site" but that has nothing to do with maintaining the home page PR. It's fine if you want to make it a "legitimate" site with good content, but it will do absolutely nothing as far as maintaining PR. PR is all about backlinks. You said the backlink profile is weak. There you go. If that's the case, the odds are the PR will drop (and has already "internally" dropped in the eyes of Google).

Buying high PR domains is all about the current backlink profile. A domain has to have existing PR backlinks that *are likely to stick* in order to be a good buy. I myself have gambled on some domains with somewhat questionable backlink profiles, but that's only when the domain is priced very, very low and then I can live with it and write it off if the PR drops at the next Google toolbar update.

The key to buying an aged domain with PR is to make sure it has a strong backlink profile. Investigate the site's backlink profile before buying - if you are already noticing some flaws - do not buy - it will not help you or be what you are looking for.

I recently purchased a PR 3 domain with a handful of backlinks ranging from PR3-PR1 backlinks.

You would want an aged domain with lots of backlinks. Get yourself a good SEO tool to check out the link profile of the site before you buy it.

You could do some sort of link exchange with other sites with PageRank while you still have the PR4 showing in the toolbar. The PR may eventually drop, but having done a few exchanges it may not drop back to 0.

You could also use this tool to get some links to try to maintain your PR: IMTalk.org - IMT Website Submitter

Guys toolbar pagerank means even less than last year because we are approaching 6 months without an update. As I have said before I have some excess Pr3 and one PR4 Domain that have no backlinks from nearly a year ago and they are still showing that PR (and other domains with low OBL PR5 and PR6 links showing PR0).

Google has next to no interest now of giving accurate pagerank information

Switch to looking at Moz and Majestic Trust Flow as a tools to determine what to research but always check the backlinks as well. Mozrank up to PR3 does a pretty good job in most cases and combined with Majestic Trustflow is a very good indicator whether a site is still holding up at higher levels PR4+
