Backlinks already done for domain name not registered...

This is interesting and let's discuss...
I found a pretty good domain name, say, for eg. howtodoXYZ.net. I did a check on this domain name and here's something interesting:
1) howtodoXYZ.net is not registered at all.
2) In Google, there are about 20+ pages when I do: site:howtodoXYZ.net. They are URLs like: howtodoXYZ.net/why-XYZ, howtodoXYZ.net/aboutus/, etc.
3) In MajesticSEO, there are backlinks to URLs like howtodoXYZ.net/getting-to-doXYZ/, howtodoXYZ.net/why-XYZ/, etc.
Note that howtodoXYZ.net was NOT even registered.
So what are the possibilities:
1) Someone did SEO work on a WRONG domain name
2) Google messed up.
So what do you think?
