Links are considered "external" or "internal" depending on perspective. For you to understand better - a link to a page outside the same domain is considered external, whereas one in the same domain is considered internal.
Internal links allow users to navigate a website. They help to establish main mad minor information for the given website and to spread ranking power around websites.

  • Dmreed,

Mobidev has a pretty good description of what internal linking is. They are simply links that lead from one URL to another URL on the same domain. I just wanted to add that another purpose of internal linking other than spreading link authority is to help users discover other parts of your website. For instance linking relevant phrases within text to other content deeper in a website helps bolster arguments or help users find other content that may be of interest to them.

    Best,

Internal linking , like others said .. .is the lead from one url to another url but on the same domain. You use this to help people navigate more easily in your website. For Onsite SEO it is used to keep google crawlers , looping in your site for as long as possible.
You should try to put as many as possible on each page . The more they loop around your site , the more value your site will have in ranking (provided your structure and content is top notch).

In a nutshell .. .thats what it is

Internal linking is about having supporting pages for each of your page and having a link to one of your page in the supporting page and also linking from external sites to your inner pages.

We all have different definition for this.

Agreed - If you have a pages which talk about similar subjects, as you probably would in a niche website, then linking to the page within the content is great for SEO. It's a bit like finding a related webpage from another website that links back to your site but doing the same internally. Plus it gives the visitor an option to click through your site which would help reduce bounce rate.

Internal linking is very important for SEO. Internal link is a link that goes to the same domain, internal link is one that points to another page on the same website.
