Difference between Google Places and Google+ Local Page

I am little confused in this term. So anyone will please explain me which is better for my website.

Dmcmark,

Google Places are the old business listing service provided by Google. The Google Plus local service is their slow integration of business and social. Search Engine Land did a pretty good write up on it.

  It's actually a tricky question because Places and Google + Local business pages are one of the same there is actually 5 products in this:
  
  Google + Local
  Google Maps
  Person Google +
  Business Google +
  Merged business listing Google + Local that has the social features (which recently Google is upgrading most business to this on it's own but some business's are not allowed social features)

Hi there,
Im looking for some help from anyone that knows about Google places..
im not an online marketer really but I run two offline company's and I need 1 of my rankings to climb.. the problem I have is.. I have no idea how to do it... its currently stuck at the bottom of page 2 :/ and has never moved in a month. it is quite new..
as this is not normal seo I wondered if any of the trusted warriors could help me get a plan into action

oh also the listing is 100% complete i can aadd the link here if anyone would like to see it
