Build a network of free blogs around your site.

Blogs like blogspot, tumblr, blog.com etc

Name these blogs after keywords related to your main site.

The key is to get these free blogs ranked for some related but easy to rank for keywords, then use them as backlinks.

    Repeat this over and over.

    Think of it this way...

Google rewards the MOST relevant sites with a high position.

So the most relevant backlink is one from a site ranking in the most relevant spots of Google.

MAKE your links relevant and you will be rewarded.

Use software to get your free blogs ranked, and link from your free sites by hand.

Don't worry about the content on your free sites, they have special privilege. Just make sure it reads well.

If you are new to internet marketing/SEO in general... the best advice you will get is to not think about SEO.

Just create amazing content/website, then promote it yourself on related forums once you have created an amazing product/website.

Seriously, you will skyrocket your efforts, but you do have to front-load a lot of work with no pay for the first few months with this method... but it pays off.

Have you taken the time to identify the keywords you want to be ranked for? Ideally each page on your site should target 1-2 keywords. Do you know how to optimize your website? Title tags and description tags are the most important to optimize. (They should up in the search engine results page.)

Do you know how to get backlinks? My favorite way is to post high quality content on other websites in my niche. This strategy is called guest blogging. Applying those two tips should be enough to get started.

Find out relevant forums related to your site and make posts on them. Quizzes= new knowledge, interesting facts, if you can start a facebook page where you post fun and interesting facts then in a short time that page will become popular, have seen them becoming popular with my own eyes. Start linking to your site and you will get traffic and rankings because of the page. The question I have is though how will you monetize it other than using something like adsense?

Your not the first person to have mentioned this. I have also read mentions of link building on PR1 sites.

How would a person go about accomplishing this??

Can you tell me the technical steps as to how you would go about getting just one link? I am guessing the process would be the same for all the subsequent links and you just keep repeating the process for each additional link.

Sorry if this is really a basic question.

Wow!. How did you get 1700 unique visitors in the first month!.

You sounded so disappointed about this but I would love to have gotten that many visitors. I think that is awesome!. Congratulations!

It makes me wonder if there is something fundamentally wrong with my own site. It is new as well and I am trying to learn how to drive traffic to it.

As it's only a new website, I'm wondering about what simple, basic and effective strategies I can employ to increase my SEO for this site and hence viewers & exposure.

In terms of statistics, the first complete month, that of July, heralded 1,750 unique visitors.

I'm new to SEO so even very obvious and basic things I should do to increase SEO may go unnoticed. Thus, as relative experts in this field, can you advise me what these basic things I can do are. Do some keyword research to find some easy, uncompetitive words you could rank for. Create a post surrounding that topic and you usually don't even have to get backlinks to have them ranking.

Those backlinks that the webmasters are placing on their own sites are the best type of links you can get, they'll most likely stick for the lifetime of the site.

Develop your SEO strategy, depending on your budget.

Spend some money on good copywriters. This will give you content for guest blogging on relevant and high PR blogs. Create social profiles linked to your site, post interesting stuff there.

For a new site, submit your site to directories like GoGuides.com, JoeAnt.com. About.com, Dmoz or Yahoo. Do some reciprocal links with relevant sites to get the ball rolling. Buy some Fiverr gigs, choose wisely. In the long run, if your site is useful, you will slowly gain natural links from other websites.

    1. Build contextual backlinks
    2. Build links from high PR website
    3. Prefer to build tiered links too as required.
    4. If you can afford you can rent high pr links in your niche - but that its own risks.

This is WAAAAAAYYYY simpler than what most people are saying on here. If I were you and I had a bit of budget, the absolute fastest way to rank and stay at the top is to buy expired domains with pr of 1-5, put relevant content on those sites and then link them to yours. that's it. Then buy a package of lower-quality links from someone (like web2.0s, articles, comments, etc) to diversify your anchor text. That will help things appear more natural to google and keep you safe.

Few recommendations (I went through your site) :
    - Slightly Expand home page title according to your keyword. This will help you to rank for many keywords.
    - Make All Titles Different and apt for content
    - Make sure the main header is H1 (presently its H2)

    Off page:

    - Do social Bookmarking - This will get some backlinks, and peoples attention and sharing.

I thought that I would give you some actual advice. I'm pretty sick of those threads when people suggest you to build web2.0s, post articles, social bookmarks, blog comments and other pointless stuff which lead to nowhere. You have somewhat interesting site, therefore I think there are plenty of people who would like to link to your naturally.

However, you have to CONTACT them, because at the moment they just can't find your site from the Google.

So, as I can see you have quiz site. Now, think... Who would like to use your site?

    A) Kids possibly?
    B) People who are bored?
    C) you name it
    D) you name it
    E) etc...

Now, once you know who is your audience, you need to think who will link to you.

For example, go to Google and search for queries like:

"What to do when bored", "list of things to do when bored" etc.. (JUST 1 example!)

And after that you will get a lot of pages, where people advise you to do this and that + they have added links.

    For example:

What things to do when bored on the Internet. (PR3)
Lists Galore!: 150 things to do when you're bored (PR2)
"I'm Bored!" - A List of 106 Things for Kids to Do - Teaching Boys

    etc...

Now just start sending them e-mails. Say that you liked their page, but also suggest your site/link. Say why it's cool, say why it's useful etc. Try to put it in 1-2 sentence.

To higher your conversion rates, you can feel free to use XENU to find out the broken links (there probably is 2-3 broken links - always is ).

And once you have found 2-3 "dead" links, just tell the webmaster about it. And at the end give your suggestion(s) (site). They are glad you helped them and most likely will give you a link as well.

If you do this 2-3 months on daily basis you will get your site ranked pretty well. It's not a shortcut, but at least you can be sure that your site will be still ranking after those "updates" which are aimed for links.

I hope that helped you to keep yourself 1 step away from getting tanked/penalized by Google.

About private networks - Yes they are useful. Probably the best thing, but I would only use those links when you can't get any "natural/editorial" links.

You might want to use this ranking strategy which is to use high PR domains to build your "power links", with some keyword anchor text, and to use other links for diversity.

Initially, you can build naked urls and generic anchor text links. You will begin to pull keywords from your ranking reports, and use those to build further links, but keeping keyword anchor texts at minimal levels.

Press release should be on your list too.
