Getting Started in PPC Affiliate Marketing

I'm new here, so let me give a brief introduction. I started getting into affiliate marketing in March. I created a review site and since then have made about $100 a month on average. So, I'm slightly experienced, but I'm still a super newbie that doesn't understand a lot of the basics. I hunger for knowledge, so I'll eventually get there. But in the meantime I seek help and understanding.

I now have 7 sites and have overwhelmed myself. My traffic has dried up and I can't get it to come back. I started running Facebook ads to grow a targeted audience for one of my sites that I could sell to later. I'm currently researching PPC ads for affiliate marketing. In fact I've been looking at all types of ways to make money online and I'm soooo overwhelmed. I need to find something and focus on it...an idea and stick with it. Expect to see many posts from me (asking annoying noobish questions no doubt) about everything under the sun. Now to the question.

I want to sell affiliate products or offers and use pay-per-click ads to drive traffic to my website where I will attempt to sell the product. How do I go about doing this? Here is my plan. Please feel free to tear this apart and help me figure out how to get PPC marketing started. I'm still not sure what works, or doesn't, or what's even allowed. I'm still in the early research stages and I consider posting on these forums for advice part of that research.

  1. Have a domain with a custom url that has product's keywords in it. Here I make a landing page for the product. The landing page has a place to collect email for list building and an affiliate link with a proper copy that will convert (fingers crossed).
  2. I create an ad and run it. I figure how much my CPC is, set a budget, figure out how many sales I need to turn a profit etc.
  3. People click my ads, go to my landing page, I convince them to buy. I get a sale. Profit.

Definitely easier than it sounds, I know, but is this a legitimate way to do affiliate marketing? Is it worth putting time in to learn and master? Is the competition too fierce with beasts such as amazon and their endless coin purse? Is it a better and faster than free traffic? Any good books or information on this subject?

Hope to learn a lot. Thanks!

You said you have started running Facebook ads, so why not stuck with it? You want to make sure you are not trying every different traffic generating method out there all at once. Start with one method (Facebook PPC) and stick with it until you are successful.

Well, the Facebook ads I'm running are to get targeted likes on the page. I have no problem running ads on Facebook for individual products, especially since I'm quite familiar with it now, but I kind of assumed with it wouldn't convert as well as say adsense would.

I think you've got your head wrapped around it ok. Send traffic to specific landing pages with the one product on it and make your ads speak to the potential buyer. If you're an affiliate, that's ok, you can still do that on FB.

My fear with Facebook ads is I noticed you have to pick a precise interest or a broad category. If I try to enter something original that Facebook hasn't recognized I'm denied that keyword. I only would want certain people in a niche to see the ad, then from there I'd like it to be seen only by people who are in to a sub-niche of that one. An example would be I can choose 'Smart Phones' as an interest, but I'm selling an Android based product. If I couldn't narrow it down to 'iphone' or even break it down from there.

This isn't my case and I'm betting you can narrow it down well with smart phones, but I noticed a few things I sell - I can't. I guess a good enough sales pitch will still get sales. I'll try running some tests on Facebook.

Anyone having success selling affiliate products with Facebook ads?

Selling affiliate products through FB ads is something I do everyday. The key is to target audiences of Popular Facebook pages. You said for example you would want to target an iPhone using audience, so search Facebook and find a popular page that has to do with iPhone apps. Then when setting up your ad, in the precise interests field, type in the name of the page to target fans of that page only. This will give you a laser targeted audience.

That's great advice. I actually done that when promoting my page for likes. It just wasn't fully connecting in my mind to do that for products.

A lot of the products I promote on my websites are low in price, under $100 with a 7-8% commission. Is PPC a good idea? It looks like profit potential would be razor thin with these. I have found some better products and services to sell, but they don't fit my websites themes. Do you make a site for each product or is there a better way to host a landing page when you just have one product to sell?

I've had a lot of success promoting lower priced offers, but high ticket items are sellable through Facebook ads as well. I simply direct link the ad to the offer using my affiliate link. This way every person who clicks on my ad will at least see the offer I am promoting. If you send them to your website first, then hope they click a link on your website to the offer, the percentages of people who will click the second link on your website is much lower.

If you direct link to the offer, have a laser targeted audience, and can maintain a good Click Thru Rate, you won't be paying very much for your clicks, which will make your profit margin higher.

I was under the impression that direct linking wasn't allowed. So, you're saying put the affiliate link in the ad, so when someone clicks the ad it goes directly to the product being promoted, skipping a landing page on your website all together?

There's nothing wrong with direct linking to an affiliate offer. So yes, you can bypass your own landing page and send your clicks directly to the offer page.

Fairly certain Google no longer allows for direct linking. CJ certainly does not.
