Cancelling a Host: Can they Mess with the Domain You Bought from Them?

It may sound silly, but I have never encountered this scenario, so I thought I would ask.

I have had it with one of my hosts, so I am going to move the site to another host.

But, the domain/website I am hosting with them is the one I bought from them. Is there anyway they can (lets say if they are trying to be A$$ about it) F... with me and somehow take the domain away.

I know there are some laws and regulation about domain names and registration, but I have heard and seen so many crazy stuff being done from this host that to be honest I am kind of afraid of them doing something crazy if I cancel the hosting.

The site I am hosting with them is young but it's already polling in over 1000 UV a day and its ranking great for all its keywords. So, I don't want to risk anything, but at the same time, the site is constantly down, their customer support is horrible, they are always trying to blame the customer for issues that clearly are their fault and so on.

Anyone has had the same situation where you bought the domain and hosting from the same company, but you cancelled the hosting and kept the domain? Did you encounter any problem?...

I would imagine with decent companies it would not be an issue, but as I said, this one I have seen and heard lots of crazy stuff about!

Thanks in advance.

actually I have heard of some doing just that. If you are nervous and they allow it why not put in a transfer to a third party registrar? do they have a control panel for the domains?

Well if its a huge provider link BlueHost or HostGator it would be an improbable possibility. They have so many clients no one gives a shit about specific clients.

Although if thou are with smaller hosting sites Ex. wpEngine
They can mess with your website, and there is a higher probability.

I'm not sure I follow. I always buy my domains via my
host. But they get registered in my name. Are not the
domains registered in your name? I can't imagine
not owning the domain I am using. How can they take
a domain that is not theirs? Unless, there is some silly
thing going on where they sell domains and keep them
registered in their names. That's like you are renting the
friggin thing. If that's the case, then I would also assume
you they may have settings that you cannot change
      nameservers, among other things.

I would never buy a domain that was not "mine."

I would transfer the domain over to Namecheap (first), then If you want to bail on the host do that after the domain transfer & cut all ties with the host. If the host sucks at hosting sites, they probably suck at everything else they're involved with.

If you transfer the domain first, then the host wouldn't even matter.

Who owns the domain? Did you pay for it outright or was it a free domain included with some package? What whois info is reporting on the domain?

Some hosts, ones that either have way too many customers to care, or ones who simple don't care about their reputation could cause problems. I have in the past heard of fly by night providers holding domains hostage. Most of these are kiddies with a reseller plan that instantly became a "CEO" over the weekend from mommies basement. The others, may have included the domain into a package - but still doesn't make it right.

As mentioned above, transfer it first. We've had customers attempt to transfer domains to us and their old provider simply denies the transfer initiation request.

satrap this might end the speculation. Go here

Whois Lookup & Domain Availability Search | DomainTools

and search for your domain. If you are listed as owner and administrator then click the tab that says "registration"

That will usually tell you who the registrar is (there are very few hosts that go through the stage of becoming an official registrar)

You may then be able to get control of the domain by asking that the password or reset instruction be sent to the owner email address. Not guaranteed but it might work. If you are not listed in the whois then you have to go through the host to get control.

Probably not if the host is a domain reseller - the host purchases the domain through their reseller account. I do not believe that a registrar has the authority to remove a domain from a resellers account without ICANN being involved.

          Hey Mike,

It doesn't have Cpanel, but its one of those powered by WHMCompleteSolution interface that looks very basic.

So, unlike cpanle setting where there is a "transfer domain" tab, there is nothing here. But, there is a Registrar Lock section where I can lock and unlock it. When I unlock it, it tells me that "I need to lock it unless I am planning to transfer it to another company". But I can't find any thing that would allow me to do that. I haven't done this before, so I do not know how it works.

So, if I unlock it here, then from another registrar they can somehow transfer it because it's not locked or it all has to be done from the current registered side (perhaps manually adding name servers or things like that?)?.... I am assuming I would need to get an authorization code from them to give to the new registrar, right?...

Yeah, I do own the domain. Its in my name and everything. However on the registration tab it shows this (along with a few other details like registration date etc)

          ICANN Registrar: ENOM, INC.
          Registrar Status: clientTransferProhibited

Is that "clientTransferProhibited" means I can not transfer it to another registrar or means without my permission they it can not be transferred? I assume it's the latest, but not sure.

Mike, I don't quite follow this, would you please explain what you mean by that? To whom do I send the password request email?...

Thanks for that. Yeah, the domain is in my name, I registered it for 5 years in advance. I am just worried since I have heard of crazy stuff happening.

Thanks Yukon. Yeah, I have to see first if I can get it transferred.

It was one of those free domain for the first year with hosting package deals, but as soon as I had everything set up, I paid for the domain for another 5 years.

Who's info is on the WHOIS record? Also, clientTransferProhibited means that domain is locked. It must be unlocked by your host before a transfer can be initiated & an EPP code given.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see where you said it's your info. The domain still has to be unlocked. If they're using WHMCS, you should be able to unlock it by going to: Manage Domain > Registrar Lock > Disable Registrar Lock button. We have a custom install & template, so that might not be the exact path to get to it using the default template.

Yeah, I can lock and unlock it myself. I have access to that. My question is since the actual registrar is eNom, would I request the EPP code from them?

I had 1and1 give me hell when I first started. Do your best to transfer out. Worst case scenario you may have to keep that particular domain on that host for awhile.

if you get a FREE lifetime domain because you buy a hosting package from them, then you will need to pay a fee to the hosting company if you want to move that domain and use it with another new hosting company that you want to join.

    But ...

if you BOUGHT the domain from them as well as the hosting, then you cancel just the hosting service only, that's fine. No worry of they will mess up with that condition. =)
