        Now I understand.

        From my point of view, "revenge" does not resolve the problem no matter how high is the degree of damages made by a person (your client, let's say). I'd recommend you to require an upfront fee before you start working. Proactively explain why you require an upfront fee (either 100 percent or a certain percentage).

        We all know that there are some clients who are half-hearted to trust again and pay upfront. Why? It is because they had not-so-good experiences in the past and it left a bad taste in their mouth. We can't blame such types of clients. We are protecting ourselves from getting ripped off. Our clients are protecting themselves as well. So the best thing you can do is, as I said above, to proactively explain your side why you're requiring an upfront fee.

        If your business is a registered one, which means you're paying taxes, send your client a digital invoice with your business' tax identification number so your client would feel that you're serious in your business and that you won't run away with their hard-earned money.

        Again, revenge, is a no-no. In Math, negative plus negative will give you a sum of a negative value still (-1 + -1 = -2). Keep in mind that you need a MASSIVE POSITIVE act in order to rectify a wrong behavior (-10 + 20 = 10).

    Have you ever tried services like Freelancer or eLance?

    Get your client to hire you through those websites, make them create a "milestone".

    The money is then kept by the Freelancer or eLance company, when your client feels you have done a good job the money is released to you.

    This way they cannot rip you off.
