Making a website appear in local search

Hi all
I have a query with regards to getting a website seen.
I've never worked with local business websites and I am helping a friend out with his at the moment.
My question is how do you make a site appear in a list - like the attached - when you type in things like 'Restaurants in London' etc etc, Google gives you a list and a map with Lettered icons to see their location.
What is it that we need to do to the site to be able to get onto this list (this is a Wordpress site BTW).
I am using restaurants as an example, the website is really in a less competitive niche. We want the site to appear for locksmiths in <town>
Any advice and tips most welcome!
