I want to start a english site with top level domain .es

The site that I want is already taken in .com
The last words of that domain is es, so I was thinking .es would be cool.

Can't tell the domain but here is an example of the idea.

You could buy yesorno.com or you buy yesor.no

My question is does it have any effect on the results in google? Even if your websites is in english.
#domains #toplevel
  • Jonathan,

Yes the TLD has an effect in search. For instance if you were trying to rank a website to market to a specific country, it helps to have that country TLD. I think all other things being optimized to rank in the US (such as localized keywords and being hosted here), any affect in having a country specific domain would be marginal. For example about.me has worked out pretty well for that company.

    Best,

    Shawn

Then using a .es domain-extension is handicapping yourself to some extent. According to Google's Matt Cutts, anyway (and I believe him).

.me is very different from .es, Shawn: .me is one of three originally geotargeted domain extensions (it was for Montenegro) which Google has openly announced is now treated exactly the same as all the international TLD's for all ranking/SEO purposes. (The other two are .co and .tv). That doesn't apply to .es.

I'm taking Jonathan as referring to, for instance, something like an international orange-shipping business using the domain-name "orang.es" with the ".es" being understood in common parlance to be part of the word? I have some of those domains, myself. I particularly like them. But there are SEO considerations about this kind of thing.
