Question about outranking a site

Okay, let's say I look up the top site for my niche on a site like ahrefs.com and it shows that the site has only 7 backlinks supporting it and its the number 1 page and first position (obviously not a big niche)

Does this mean If I were to get 8+ backlinks of same quality, or higher quality (and my onpage SEO was good) that I would pass the site and take number 1 after some time?

or could I still be under it if that site has more content?

furthermore,

let's say that site on rank 1 is really part of a much bigger site like about.com, but one of that site's pages is rank 1 for this keyword. Does the fact that the page comes from a big domain make it also harder to beat? or only that site's specific page with that keyword I must compete with?

    Higher in quality? Yes, one of the main factors. But there are a couple of others.

      There's many, many factors that can contribute to that website's rankings. Here are a few of them.

      1.) The Backlinks: If you get higher quality backlinks than the other website, you theoretically should rank higher than that site if your on-page SEO is good.

      2.) PageRank flows from the main page of a website to the website's other pages and back, a website like About.com with a high pagerank will disperse some of the root domain's pagerank to its other pages.

      With that having been said, the pagerank from the root domain is distributed among the other pages, so an authoritative website that has 10 pages will distribute much more pr to them than an authoritative website that has 100 pages.

      Keep focusing on building high quality backlinks and focus on on-page SEO and you will do excellent :-)

    Hard to say by this info only.

    What you have to compete is the authority of that domain sitting on #1. Good news is that their inner page may not be that well optimized for your targeted keywords. What you need to do for sure is optimize your website really good and then just get some links with higher quality than your competitors.

    You should also have in mind that in many cases you won't be able to see some of your competitors backlinks simply because they might have blocked major site crawlers. So don't take stats for granted. I do however believe this is not the case here. So optimize and go grab a couple of good backlinks. Good luck.

    There are many factors in ranking a keywords, don't think that backlinks and on-page optimization are only..

    domain name extension
    keyword in domain name
    age of domain name
    period of domain name registration
    hosting server

    these are also factors in SEO.
