1. Are directories a thing of the past, or does it still make sense to link them
2. when i do guest posts, or posts on my blog, how do i link back in the about the author box, and how do i create this box.
I do use wordpress and having a hard time getting it right, any suggestions

3. Besides the obvious, buying links, spamming etc etc. anything i should stay away from if im taking a pure white hat approach

Directory links are still a method of link building, only one thing you have to know that only directories won't be helpful for ranking, if you are using directories then make sure that you are using quality, high pr, niche directories, use fresh description, title, tags etc..

    1) If the directories are high PR and drive direct traffic to your site then it's still wise to use them as a part of your linkbuilding strategies.. However, it's almost impossible to find such directories for free.

    2) How do you create the box? - I believe there is some sort of WP plugin available.

    3) Well, too heavy guestposting can cause problems as well, I believe. Try to get guest posts from sites that normally do not offer guest posts. Which means that they also don't have this "box" below the article and your link would look more editorial/real.

If you have a quality site, you can always ask for links by e-mailing. Search for sites using Google that are related to your niche that has resources or directories. i.e. gardening resources and ask if they can add your site to the list.

You can do directory submission on high pr sites, but don't depend only on it..adopt 2- 3 more methods of off page seo..

Well it might me not related to this question but your questions are already answered. This must be beneficial to you. Use a plugin replytocom controller to control the replytocom links.
    Why?
Because if you would not do it you would get penalized by Google due to duplicate content.
Do it so you would not see a traffic drop in future atleast for duplicate content.
