Hi everyone! I just started my own ecommerce store and am in the process of learning how to get more organic traffic. Has anyone ever had experience hiring someone to do their SEO for them? What are some things to watch out for? How would I monitor the progress and if what they're doing is actually efficient? Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Lots of things to watch out for, and unless you know enough about SEO then you could easily be taken for a ride.

Look at key metrics like rankings (obviously), links and traffic.

Honestly, i would advise you learn as much as possible about the topic and then go from there. 90% of the industry can't provide results for a decent budget. Then of that, most of them wont provide sustainaible results.

Most SEO agencies are now trying to funnel their clients in to PPC and social media, which means they arent really confident of getting anyone long term results in todays marketplace.

I like your site (in your sig), and will be reading the link as time permits. Having skimmed over it...very well done, one of the few great writers out there.

Things to request when you are hiring a SEO :-
    1. Reporting on backlinks they build, keyword rankings and work done (monthly or even better a weekly reporting)
    2. A detailed report on what they will be going to do for SEO before you hire them (on a monthly or weekly basis)

That's about the 2 most important things. When you're a beginner, you don't want to hire a SEO if you don't know what you will be getting because most of them out there will just "guarantee you page 1 rankings" without knowing what's going on in the back end.

    Hope that helps.

It is a tough one. If you are like most people and are expected to only be paying a few $ an hour, then I would advise you just learn it yourself as for that price you wont be getting any expertise.

If you want your website to grow like a real business, then you need someone who really knows what "white-hat SEO" means and how to actually do it. This does not mean crappy web2.0's which have are both weak and ticking time bombs until they get dropped. This does not mean blog commenting or social bookmarking.

If you have the money to invest in real quality white-hat SEO, then go ahead and hire a real expert. The results won't be instant but you will build your website a long term future. However if you have very limited funds and want instant results, I would say invest the money in PPC instead and learn the SEO side of things yourself. Your SEO will be less effective, but if you can get your head around some basic PPC principles then at least you won't be wasting your money.

if hes linking you may need to wait a month or so to see the results though

Hire 15 of them, and have it like the gameshow "The Apprentice". Where once a week you bring them all into the boardroom and fire one.

I noticed Backlink Monitor only judges quality by PR and OBL. Too few factors to be a good judge of anything with that tool. PR toolbar not being updated in a dogs age, kinda make Backlinks Monitor a dead duck really.

Things I would look out for a new site is make sure you don't blast it with too many links to begin with. Start off with a slow drip feed and increase as time goes on. The best kind of links in today's Google are natural looking links, with relevant content. Get a diverse array of good quality white hat links and you should be good.

Wordpress always creates 3 pages at least, when you publish a post and sticky it to the homepage:

        - homepage url
        - actual post url
        - category url

Then back link monitor flags the actual post url, the people remove it, bye bye PR6 homepage link.

Those tools are so ******* lame.

It won't be the first request I received where people wanted to throw away a link that they paid $80 or $160 for lol.

The biggest advice that I can give you is not to hire anyone to do anything until you know what you are looking for. When I say that I mean know what to look for with on-page optimization, content, and know what a GOOD link looks like. The ratio of crap to legitimately awesome services is too skewed to try to jump in head first without knowing what you are looking for.
