So, i have a site which was ranking on the 2nd page of google for a specific keyword with my homepage.

In the last 3 days it was vanished from google and a subpage went to the 2nd page on that keyword.

Today i noticed something. If, using Chrome i was with my google account connected, searching on google with that keyword would get me the Homepage on 2nd place of 1st page.

If on the other way, i disconnect from the google account and do the same search, the subpage appears (not the homepage) again, on the 2nd page of google.

Somebody explains this to me as i think i'm going crazy

Log out from your Google account for accurate SERP results.

While logged in, Google personalizes the SERP data.

This is how Google works. If you had already visited the homepage of your site through Google results with you signed in Chrome, for some time you will see the homepage in first page with the color of link Purple. You should see a text below the meta description saying "You have visited this page X times".

Better use a rank checking tool like whatsmyserp.com and its free. Just to be sure you really know the serp of your keywords.

When you say you optimized your homepage, does that mean you throw in some backlinks or just on page seo?

Well, both. Some backlinks pointing to the webpage but without anchors (as it seems google hates them now!), simple links in forums and submission to web directories, and some on page optimization.

      A little more info:
      The keyword is "carros usados".
Previously http://www.altarotacao.com was on 2nd page. Now i can't find it anywhere to this keyword, but the page is indexed.

Instead of the homepage i have now http://www.altarotacao.com/carros-usados on the 2nd page for "carros usados".

On Webmaster tools there is no info that the site was punished.

Once again, the homepage was never really ranking on the 2nd page. You were seeing personalized results. That's all.

Nope... why do you say that with so much certain? What makes you believe i've never tried to check my ranking in incognito mode of chrome?

Besides, the subpage is much younger than the homepage. And the homepage is much more optimized and has backlinks while the subpage is slightly optimized and has no backlinking.

But, assuming i was penalized by google what tools can i use to figure out the problem and fix it?

Mike, i don't really want to go through this "flame" way.
I said that, it's true. But, i also said what i said in my last post.

Now, this is a forum and i suppose it's to help each other.
What happened is: Last night i was only seeing my subpage for a specific search and the result was on the 2nd page of google. I wasn't in incognito mode of chrome. Today, for the same search i'm not seeing my subpage on 2nd page but..instead my homepage.

Recently, let's say, at 3 or 4 days ago, my homepage was on the 2nd page (with incognito off and on). That's it.

Something is wrong, can anyone help me?~

              Thanks

You are seeing personalized results. If you are logged in in your gmail account and searching and clicking many times your own website then it is also possible that you may see your website on 1st page 1st position. For getting actual result always clear your browser's cache or try searching on other browsers..

Yes. If i'm logged at google and do a search, google will give me the results that i've clicked before, amoung others.

What if i do that in incognito mode?

If you are logged in, incoginito or not, you are still seeing personalized results. THAT is the most likely reason why you see the difference.

Either way though, a ranking change does not indicate a penalty. A change in links, content, etc. could have made Google determine it just likes the other page better.

You should really use a third party application to check rankings. Even then, you are going to see differences. If I do a search in California, I will see different results than if I perform the exact same search in Pennyslvania. SERPs are more fluid and personalized based on location than they were a few years ago.

Right, when i meant incognito i was also meaning not logged.

But that is what i think is weird. Homepage is pr2 and is on page optimised and has some backlinking. The other don't have nothing...just the keyword on the URL.

I see! So should i be doing backlink to that specific page or to the homepage?

In my case is kind of stupid to have that page ranking higher than the homepage, as this is a listing page, a page that get input from the homepage.

    Along with what Mike said.

If your not logged into a Google account, Google looks at your ISP (Internet Service Provider) GEO location.

    Example,

My ISP is over 50 miles from where I live, so If I go to Chrome Incognito & search for the keyword weather, I get the city name/weather/results for a town that's 50 miles away. If I search for weather [my zip code] I get my town name & weather forecast for the town, zip code, GEO location where I live. BTW, the weather/temp. at my ISP GEO location usually will be slightly different than my own zip code search for the same keyword (weather).

My point is, even If you have a clean browser history/cache Google will fall back on your own ISP GEO location which will be different than my ISP GEO location (personalized search).

Even If you use a 3rd party to look at Google search results you'll still get personalized search results based on that 3rd parties GEO location (proxy location, ISP location, etc...).

    I see! Thanks!

But, regarding my problem. As this is the most proeminent page to google, should i start doing backlinking to it?

We're not sure if that page is really ranking since it is a personalized search results. But if you really want the homepage to rank, I think you should build backlinks to the homepage with keyword as anchor text. Also use similar keywords and also have some URLs as anchor text for variation. Just to be on the safe side by not having too much same anchor text over and over again. Even some thinks it's a myth, but I believed in it.
