Hi!!

I'm doing some keyword research, trying to find a good niche for selling products through ecommerce. But I have some doubts:

For example:

I'm searching for "Wedding dress"

I get lot of results (I'm using Market Samurai)

Some results are:

"Cheap wedding dresses" (Highest search volume)
"Cheap wedding suits"
"Wedding dresses"
"Wedding suit"
"2013 wedding dresses"

...

All these keywords are very similar and are almost the same.

Then, I find other keywords that fit well for category pages like:

"Short wedding dresses"
"Long wedding dresses"
"Simple wedding dresses"
"Big sizes wedding dresses"

...

I understand that these keywords are good for category pages, but...the problem is for the main homepage.

The question is: It is a good idea to target "Cheap wedding dresses" as my main keyword (main homepage) because it has the highest search volume, and then, target the rest of the keywords that are:

"Cheap wedding suits"
"Wedding dresses"
"Wedding suit"
"2013 wedding dresses"

in my ecommerce blog (as a blog post) to get some additional traffic?

I'm doing it correctly? Is there another way to do it better?

Thanks!!

Adrian to see competition for a keyword you need to check first 10 websites ranked for the keyword. Google PR was a good option to have a quick look on competition via SEO quack. But nowadays it become difficult as PR is almost outdated. I would recommend you to stop subscribing MS and invest for ahref. After it search keywords in GKP and then make a list of good search volume basis keywords. After all check the keyword manually on google and see how many backlinks pointed to the first 10 or 5 domains using the keyword as anchor text. If you see a large number of dofollow, anchored backlinks are pointing towards the ranked URLs then skip the kewyord. Otherwise proceed with the keyword. Do same for all the keywords.

Thanks for your answer Hossain, I've already an idea how to check competition but the problem is:

Imagine that I get these words:

"Cheap wedding dresses" (Highest search volume) 20.000
      "Cheap wedding suits" 15.000
      "Wedding dresses" 10.000
      "Wedding suit" 3.000
      "2013 wedding dresses" 2.000

Imagine that all these keywords have low competition...Should I target all these keywords or only the one with the highest search volume?

      Thanks

Its simple. Working on multiple keywords would require time+labor+budget. So if you can afford then I would recommend you to work on as many keyword as you can. But if you have tight budget then work on the most searched one.

Here is a technique not always great but I have tried it many times and most of the time I got good results. As your keywords are..

        "Cheap wedding dresses"
        "Cheap wedding suits"
        "Wedding dresses"
        "Wedding suit"
        "2013 wedding dresses"

Now you can combine 5 keywords into one.

"2013 cheap wedding dresses and suits"

If the keywords are low competitive then this long tail combined keyword will help you to rank for even all of the keywords you are targeting than the work for 5 different keywords. But again this method will not be able to rank you on first page always. But surely will help you to reduce some cost, labor and budget.

        Hope that helps.

Great reply Hossain , you have solved my doubts. I'll try to rank for 1 or 2 keywords then... I think its better to begin from the bottom and then rise to the top.

Any way I can give you points for your answer? :p

          PD: I gave you thanks

Generally the homepage's of these ecommerce shops have a lots link equity. Rather than picking a couple of huge keywords to plunk on your homepage which remain really static all through your crusade, in its place utilize your homepage to rank rapidly for occasional terms and drifting items. So in Novemeber you may utilize the homepage to target "Christmas shopping", rapidly after you'll need to switch it up to concentrate on "January deals", then "Valentines offers".
The focus about your homepage is any progressions you make to it are liable to be ordered quite rapidly and due to all the link value/ Pagerank indicating it this is the speediest approach to get a standing for lucrative regular terms. As any retailer will authenticate, hitting regular shopping patterns as this where the money back grantee comes.

Keyword match types help control which searches can trigger your ad.You could use broad match to show your ad to a wide audience or you could use exact match to hone in on specific groups of customers.
