I am wondering for a niche site I am helping build if we should target the keyword we are going for in the domain or a more friendly name we can build a community around. I've seen both sides on Moz and a few other sites saying it helps, or that google removed the ranking for EMD's so just wanted to confirm with the warriors before I start building.

Thanks in advance!

Do an EMD for marketing and branding rather than for SEO. You don't get a lift for having one anymore from Google.

Okay, if its just for marketing I think I rather come up with a catchy name rather than our boring main keyword we are targetting. Thanks @bertyounger

EMDs still provide an advantage, however they're more vulnerable to slaps now, try a partial match domain, they still give an advantage but are safer in my opinion..

    Sure, EMD's still work.

Simply head over to Google and key in "credit cards" without the quotes.

You will see that creditcards.com is nicely ranked above all other "real" credit card sites and even above wikipedia.

Creditcards.com is basically an affiliate web site by the way and has been number 1 for that term for many years now.

Next time somebody tries to sell you some hogwash go check it out yourself.

Uh..., that EMD on it's own isn't ranking a single page.

It doesn't hurt to have an EMD, but it doesn't help much either. Certainly they are a lot less effective than they used to be.

They still work, but are not the advantage in and of themselves they once were.

If you are only considering emd's for SEO then it's not anymore helpful, but it's a good choice for marketing

Many low quality EMD websites are top for many search queries. Those websites will be down from SERP of Google when it release next EMD Update. But still Google gives importance only to high quality EMD Domains which are following search engine guidelines. Google Always suggests Build a website and make it popular instead creating keyword rich domain.

EMDs still matter and it can still rank but not like before where it worked like magic – Google gave a much boost even without having to build many quality links. Whether your domain is an EMD or not, keep in mind that the most important factor is still the overall domain strength wherein those who rank on the top got higher quality links. Even if a site is an EMD, what leads to a better site is the quality of links.

Yes EMD's still work. I've EMDs that rank pretty well. However don't build lots of backlinks to your EMD directly. Only point quality backlinks to your EMD. Use tiered links for SEO to prevent any kind of penalty on the EMD.

I would go for a sweet name cos EDM does EXACTLY the same job as non-EDM now.

I would say this is completely wrong. EMD's are still getting a boost.

Very true, EMD's are still working just fine and offer a definitive boost.

I would say your mistaking a primary keyword in first instance of a url as an EMD boost.
Both one and the same in most minds, but different in algos eyes. End of the day though, who cares?
EMD - non EMD, its all still going to weigh heavily on links. I'd personally still take an EMD if available, in case I'm wrong.

I think they still give an edge, as long as your content is of as high, or higher, quality than the non-EMD sites that you are competing with.

    Depends what your goals are.

Sure EMDs may still give you a bit of a boost, but if you're good at SEO it doesn't really matter. The "EMD boost" is not a game changer.

If you are going for long-term results, you're better off forgoing the EMD for a brandable domain name that people will remember.
