Riding piggyback

Has anybody experienced this before? One of my sites is gradually getting higher in the search results, Googles anyway, for it's 2nd main keyword. For it's main keyword it wasn't anywhere until a few weeks back and then it appeared two places below another site of the exact same domain name, except for the extension which I had already looked at to see what backlinks it has etc.
Anyway recently the 2nd main keyword has been moving up, but the other site was a few pages back for the same keyword, but a couple of weeks back it appeared directly below me. Gradually my site has been rising but the other site seems to be riding piggyback as it moves up with me and is still one place below me, although for a couple of days we did change places.
I don't think I've seen this before and it just seems interesting.
