Connecting on Twitter

So I thought let's become a little active on Twitter, based on other people's advices I followed a shitload of people and a good % followed me back so that I have like 130 followers.
When you only have real friends on Twitter it's a nice medium of course.
But when you look at it from a business point of view with 1000's of other SEO's, you seriously think someone is ever going to actually read my Tweets?
Heck, I get 1000's of Tweets a day through my dashboard, I might read 0.0001% from it as I only login once in a while to tweet something or to check how many followers I have.
Let's assume my 130 followers do the same. Seems like a huge waste of time if you ask me.
Even IF people would retweet me I probably wouldn't notice it in the massive amounts of tweets that go on day in day out.
Do you really think it's possible to build connections on Twitter or am I doing it all wrong and should I focus on specific people that I think I might be able to sell something too at some point and semi-stalk them there by retweeting and responding to their nonsense (uh tweets)?
