So much information: What do I need?

Hey all, it's always a pleasure to read your web advice.

I have a website on page 1 of Google in the #10 spot. I don't have any backlinks, but I'm investing more time into content.

Any idea on what I should do to rank my website higher? There are so many offers on this website! I'm thinking something along the lines of an SEO service in the hire thread.

For some reason paying for backlinks scares me. Will it hurt my site?

Best,
KQN

You would probably create backlinks with more care than a paid source, be sure you don't buy something like 1000 links for $10, in the past Google just ignored such robot spam links, now they may require you to make an ernest effort to remove such links with a dreaded "Unnatural link pattern" warning.

You need backlinks to rank well, sounds like you are luckily in a low competition field, getting links in the body text of articles, like from guest blogging, are much better than blog comment links.

To find at least related sites where you can get some links, try this Google search generator:
Drop My Link -Google backlink search aid- Find sites to create backlinks on

Getting baclinks at a steady rate, perhaps 2 a day for starters is another thing you can do better than some outsourced link source.

Do use a backlink reporting tool like opensiteexplorer or backlinkwatch to measure the backlink power of the higher ranked sites, it's not just quantity that counts in a backlink appraisal.

If you are just buying backlinks and not having right onpage optimization, it wont help. Quality high PR backlinks would always help. Learn SEO basics it would help you to understand it better

Frankly, I can't imagine a site on google first page that doesn't have backlinks,
I know content is King and unique and user friendly content is important for ranking, but content alone is not enough you also need quality backlinks for your site.

Instead of just trying to get that one page to rank high for your keyword, dominate the entire page from sites like Pinterest which feature your pins and links back to your pages. Not saying Pinterest is a good SEO strategy, just mentioning how Pinterest pages and Google+ posts should rank well all on their on and the links on those pages will belong to you.

    Probably more hurt than help.

Forget the guys selling links to anyone that shows up with a dollar.

Get links from pages on relevant domains, where the entire domain is focused on the same overall niche.

If your selling automotive tires/rims, get links on automotive sites (example).
