Should I change the name of my website?

Hi there,

I am making about $800 a month extra money by having Adsense on my website but because the name of the site is long and doesn't really mean anything I think it is effecting the return traffic where nobody can find my site again because the name is too hard to remember and that in turn is effecting my SEO and therefore income from Adsense.

I am really thinking about changing the name but do you think it will be worth it?

If I do decide to change the name what is the best way to change the name without effecting SEO too much?

The income if very important to me because I have a young daughter.

Sorry I am a bit sketchy with some details but I have been hacked so many times I am more careful now with all due respect.

Maybe If I buy another domain name which I direct to the original site and put an image of the new site name on the original site as the header? Or something like that?

No, don't change it! You'll lose practically all of your Adsense income.

If you want to make it easier to promote your site with a shorter domain name, simply buy the new domain and redirect it to your current domain.

If you change your website then it will completely affect your seo. All of your rankings will be lost because google will see it as new site. The best way to do this is forward a new domain. Say your original site is internetmarketing.com and you want to change it to seomarketing.com. Then people will go to seomarketing.com but they will see internetmarketing.com. This comes in handy when dealing with company landing pages that you want to make your own.

  This is good advice but people that find the original site through Google, which will be most people, will not know the name of the new site and will share the original one. that would only be good for giving to people directly which I don't really need to do much of. Just saying.

Different people will choose the one they like. You could market the new name in different ways to increase traffic. My only word of caution: sometimes on mobile devices redirects get warning messages to suspicious sites...possibly they disappear for the user with use or somebody knows how to eliminate this annoyance. I have not heard the same issue on laptops or desktops. There is no perfect solution.

The above fixes are cheap and easy. Combine them with duplicating your knowledge and build another new site for a similar or different product and choose a domain name you like better for this product starting out. Now you have two streams of income. Rinse and repeat.

I agree with those who say don't change the name of your website.

If you change the name of the site you will loose all your backlings, SEO. Also keep in mind that the domain name has no relevance to Google. Also when you consider bookmarking and auto complete (for people typing in the URL) a long domain name isnt that bad (though it isnt great either)

If I have enough interest in a site that I want to return I don't
try to remember the url... I book mark it. Don't most people?

I'm no Adsense expert but I'd think long and hard before I started
tinkering with a site that's already making $800/mo

As for the income stated, it seems very high as many Adsense bloggers are not earning anywhere close to that.

Just best not to mess with success over a trivial matter like domain name.

  Please do not tamper with a site which is generating $800 passive cash through Adsense. Seriously, if I as a visitor liked your website and wanted to visit it back I would bookmark it and not remember it.

Why not start up a new site?

Now that you're comfortably earning $800/month from one site, the best thing to do (in my humble opinion) would be to start up a new site, preferably something you can monetize with affiliate programs or your own product, and not just AdSense.

You've heard it, no one who understands how SEO works will change the name of the site. Don't worry about your url, I (we- the customers) wouldn't be interested in it. What drives people to your sites are keywords (for onsite SEO), and backlinks (for offsite SEO), among others. People click to be directed to your site. Drive people to your site using these methods and you'll continue earning. And for the record, you have repeat customers, they will always come back, keep them, as you look for more.

Now that you have found out you started with a "not so good" domain name, do not repeat that mistake. Open another website with your desired url, and optimize it, and make more money.

Since a new domain costs so little, why not put the new domain up, and see how it goes? It shouldn't take too long to see how the 2 sites compare, assuming you kept records or can get stats of how the original site performed when it was first made.

Thanks guys interesting opinions and most seem correct and helpful. Although I have noticed that some sites just have an IP address as their URL so there must be something to be said for the IP and not just the example@TLD.

If you will change your website name then you can lose you backlinks and also you can lost your trafic.

I would suggest that you retain the domain name of your website. I don't think it's going to affect much on the income of your website. People visit your website because of the content of your site and not just because of the domain. Some people consider it as a factor though. But, as for me it wouldn't affect my interest on your site.

It would be better for you to add more interesting contents to your website for more traffic.

If you do a proper 301 redirect on all of your pages to the same page on the new domain, wouldn't that preserve the prior SEO?

If I were you I'd begin a gradual, timed transition from your current site to your new one with the new domain you create. You could do this by putting a message on your current website informing visitors that in, for example, 60 days the current site will cease operation and that all of it's functions will be moving over to the new site.

Tell them that the new site will be more streamlined, more easily accessible with an easier to remember name, perhaps redesign the site completely for a fresh start while keeping some themes for familiarity, make it seem like a big shift around at the company, list whatever reasons you like. I think it's important to list a good few reasons so your visitors don't think it's all just being done for the sake of it.

  This is probably the best advice here. Even if you started another site in the SAME niche, it's still good to do that instead of starting over if you're already making money passively with what you have. If you own a McDonalds and the Burger King across the street, who cares which one customers eat at, you know?

My opinion is first buy another domain name and pointed (Dns) for both (previous and new) domain name to your website ..That is good idea .. It will helps to improve traffic .

after reading through all of the comments, Gary i agree that you should leave it as is and start a new site all together. you will lose all of your hard work if you change the name. it would make much more sense to start a new project and keep your current revenue stream intact until you can replace it fully or be in a position where you dont care if you take a significant hit to your current Adsense rev.

Use 301 redirects if you choose to change your domain name.

If I were you though, I wouldn't mess up the $800/month stream. That would bite if it didn't work in your favor. You can always supplement your existing site by creating a new one too. :-)
