Is SEO just one part of HTML?

The way I think of SEO, I just include it as part the normal task of writing good HTML. Your pages need the following:
1. Page Titles
2. Headings
3. Easy to use navigation
4. Alt text of images (also a standard)
5. Correct use of the meta title and meta description

In many ways this IS search engine optimization. You are making it possible for search engines to understand what your page is about, what the images depict, which parts of the page are the most imports, and which links they can follow next.

Outside of this, I feel most activities are marketing, not optimization. Your thoughts?

    That's good onpage SEO, then there is offpage SEO..

    But when I think about the offpage stuff, it's all about realted links, if you can get your link on realted websites you're doing much better..

    Although I have ranked a pretty competetive keyword, only backlinking the anchor text "my name" lol.

      I don't think there's really such a thing as off-page optimization.

      You can't optimize somebody else's site, can you?

        Yes, this is my point exactly. I think you have to make a separation between marketing your website (which may help you with search engine traffic too) versus optimizing your site so that search engines can easily read and index the site.

      well, there's more than that

      off-site onpage (someone elses site) = do the the elements match your requirements. Do they contain the keywords on your site too.

      on-site onpage(ur site)

      offpage seo (basic backlinking), regardless of what their pages say.

    Great concept. Over the last year that is how I have thought about creating websites that adding title, meta tages, H1 tags, good relevant content with the keywords on the page etc is all part of the website development process in my thinking

    Yeah, it is a good practice to immediately incorporate on-page SEO while you are working on a site however majority of web developers are not internet marketers. There is a saying: "Web developers keep SEO consultants in business"

    There's a lot more for example the SEO of other sites in your niche should also be a factor in both on page and off page SEO (I don't mean copying, I mean improving). There's actually over 60 core factors to consider, and many of those core factors are made up of hundreds. I wish I had time to list them all here.

    On-page optimization can be treated as SEO but off-page SEO optimization is equally important. If you talk about only getting backlinks from relevant sites then it can be termed as a marketing task but this itself needs to be optimized to give your max benefit like keywords in the anchor text etc.

    I tend to agree with your assertion that what many folks call off-page optimization is really, in my opinion, marketing or promoting activities. However I wouldn't call on-page optimization a part of HTML. HTML is the language of the web, while there are many aspect to on-page optimization that can't be called HTML.

    The key to successful SEO is keyword research. It doesn't matter how well you implement those elements in HTML, if you haven't done the proper keyword research you may not benefit much.

    To be fair all aspects of SEO is marketing, while off-page SEO or backlink building is primarily promoting activity, on-page SEO is almost purely optimization.

    But SEO is not only about the keywords on the website's html codes. It is a mixture of on-page and off-page. On-page focus on on-page stuffs like content, tags, and keywords. While, off-page focus to building links which is a veru tedious work!
