9 Things You May Not Know about Google

1. EMD Is Dead

EMD(exact match domain) means the domain name which contains the exact keyword you target. I think many internet marketing experts had told you to use EMD for your niche website because that could help your google ranking a lot. This was true in the past, but not now. In fact, in 2012, Google released an update that was meant to reduce the ranking ability of EMDs.

Another problem with EMD is that you risk being penalized by Google for the reason of anchor text over optimization. Why? It could be possible that many of your natural backlinks use the website url or domain name as the anchor texts. If your domain is not EMD, the anchor texts of those links are OK. But if your domain is EMD, the anchor texts all contain the exact keyword you target. And you will have a high percentage of backlinks that use the exact same keyword phrase as anchor text. This is not what Google likes now. After Penguin update, many websites were penalized because of this. So it's better to choose a simple and easy to remember domain now even for a small niche website.

2. TrustRank

Not only PageRank, but also TrustRank can determine your website's Google ranking. If a lot of trusted sites are linking to you, then you have a high TrustRank which is very helpful for Google ranking. This is why newspaper links, gov links and edu links are so valuable, because if you have those backlinks, you get high TrustRank.

There are 3 tiers of websites that are highly trusted by Goolge. Tier1 websites are handpicked sites that are known to be highly trusted - websites like Stanford.edu, USA.gov , NYTimes.com, etc. Tier2 are the websites that get tier1 backlinks. Tier3 are the sites that get tier2 backlinks. So your website should aim to get tier1 and tier2 backlinks to get high TrustRank.

Another benefit of high TrustRank is that your website will be less likely to be penalized by Google because you are trusted.

3. Natural Keyword Density

What is natural density? It's whatever density occurs naturally when an expert in their field writes an article. Don't care about keyword density when doing SEO. It's fine just to include your keyword once in paragraph one of your article.

4. Linking Out Is Good for Your Website

When building backlinks, everyone thinks about getting inbound links as many as possible. Not many people think of building some outbound links to some related resources in the niche in their articles often.

There two main benefits for doing this:
a). Google gives your content more authority because it shows that you know your topic very well.
b). The website that gets a backlink from you may notice you and might give you a backlink for return in future.

5. Your Tag Pages Can Actually Rank Quite Well in Google

I think many people ignore the seo potential of their wordpress tag pages. Some people might even tell google not to index their tag pages because they are worried about duplicate content issue. In fact, your tag pages may rank very well in Google if you obey the following principles:

a). The tags should be different from your categories. If one of your category is "weight loss receipt", then don't use this as one of your tags. This can avoid the duplicate content issue between your category pages and your tag pages.
b). Don't use a tag that will just be used for one time. Because in that case the content of the tag page will be the same as the post that use the tag.
c). Add some unique content as the tag page introduction to make the tag pages even more unique and better for Google ranking.
d). Don't abuse tags for each post. You don't have to add one hundred tags to only one post. That's too many. Only use the tags that are most related to your post.

6. User Experience Is Important

Don't use several exact match keywords in your website navigation unless it's natural. Some websites get penalized just because of this kind of over optimization. The category names should be natural and user friendly.

In fact, the average time visitors spend on your website and the bounce rate can affect your google ranking directly. Sometimes just improving the user engagement and conversion of your web pages can improve your ranking.

7. You Can Have A Useless .edu Link Just Like You Can Have A Great .com Link

Why? Because Google just don't simply assign a special level of trust or authority to the whole education site. In Google's eyes, some parts of the site can be authoritative, but some other parts may not. There are pages on .edu domains that spammers can easily manipulate to gain links to their sites. If you post a comment and get a link on those pages, it's not useful at all, though it's a dofollow link on the .edu page. Because Google thinks those pages are spam, they are not authority at all.

8. The Power of Tweet Links, Google+ and Facebook Likes

If an authority in your niche posted a tweet that included a link to your website, that link would help your google ranking a lot even though that link is nofollow.

Facebook likes can also affect the ranking especially for personalized search result. For example, if you logged in Bing and searched a keyword, some pages for which your friends gave facebook likes would show on the first page. Though these pages may not be shown on the first page in the normal search result.

Your web pages may get higher rankings if they have received some Google+ shared links. Google+ also affects Google's personalized search results.

9. Not Making Your Website Mobile Friendly Is A Big Mistake

Why? There are mainly two reasons:

A)About 30% of your search traffic is from mobile and tablet. If you don't make your website mobile friendly, you lose large volume of traffic.

B)61% of the mobile visitors will return to google to visit your competitors mobile websites. As I said in #6 above, bounce rate can influence your google ranking directly. In this case, your bounce rate will rise and your ranking will drop.

Yeah good stuff, although I would disagree with your EMD thoughts, EMD's still have slight power. It's all about keyword relevance and with an EMD, you will always have that edge if you provide good content and have a great link building strategy.

Yes I agree. Not all the EMDs are bad. If the EMD is the same as your brand, it's good. But most of the time, people use EMD just for SEO purpose. That's not what google likes now. That's the LOW QUALITY EMD that was devalued by google. My point is that EMD do have some slight power, but not as powerful as it was before.
