Lets say you're reviewing a barbeque.

Lets say its called:
Johnsons Grill F10 Barbeque

According to google adwords:
10 people are searching for: Johnsons Grill F10 Barbeque
1500 people are searrching for: Johnsons F10 Barbeque
3100 people are searching for: Johnsons F10

Its all the same product, but people are searching mostly for the shortened version.

When doing on page SEO. For pictures and article reviews. Should your keywords be: Johnsons F10 or Johnsons Grill F10 Barbeque?

Does google want the "exact" keywords people are typing or is it better to take the long version of the product name?

    Hi,

Since all of these keywords promote a super niche site, you can get them all and make them as your target keywords. This way you are making sure that you get traffic from all these keywords.

And yes you are correct, most of the time people search for short term keywords or keywords that are quite generic. But it does not mean that long tail ones are not important.

There are others who collect a lot of longtail keywords to get as much traffic as one generic, high competing keyword. Since long tail are commonly low competition keywords, you can rank them quickly and easily.

I also suggest you use more than one tool (other than Google) when looking for your keywords. There are also useful (free) tools you can utilize along with Google Keyword Planner like Traffic Travis or Long Tail Pro.

    I hope that helps!

I would write my content for Johnsons F10 Barbeque

But build my links by this prioirty
    1. Johnsons F10
    2. Johnsons F10 Barbeque

This way your covering all your keywords in one phrase. And by concentrating on the main keyword with linking, in turn you will build the pages authority and find it fairly easy to rank for lesser words. Unless this barbeque costs $20000 with a 20% commission, a search volume of 10 does not count as a volume worth worrying about.
