Do you think this link profile is dangerous?

Hi, I started to manage a website that is facing a traffic drop since a few months and I was guessing if that is due to the link profile the old webmasters have built:

- More than 80% of links are dofollows coming from a PR4 syndication site (more than 100.000 links coming from there).

- The second biggest source is a PR2 abandoned website sending more than 8.000 dofollow links from the footer. Anchor text is URL (not optimized).

Do you think that any of those sources may be triggering Penguin attention? I am afraid to remove them since they have a lot of weight in the total links count... Should I try?

Why did you buy the domain if it looked to have a dodgey link profile in the first place?

Yes, many of my clients have seen a similar traffic drop and most of those clients have had a lot of site wide links pointing to their website, most probably from low quality domains.

I guess syndication and sitewide links do not really work too well these days.

Generally speaking, the high PR domain should have good quality links coming in from a lot of different sources, not just a handful.

Well I haven't bought the domain, I am just managing the site.

Good point. Do you think that removing a big sitewide could harm if it has big weight in your profile? I've seen some websites with optimized sitewide incoming links that rank good for the sitewide anchor keywords.

Nah, removing sitewide links quickly can actually get you to rank lower since you are deleting a lot of links at the same time.

My advice: Build quality links AND remove the sitewide links slowly.

Or better yet, start with a new domain name.

Why do people do client SEO and site management via the WF?

        Complete ripoff.

I think that questions in forums like this one may help the guy that started the thread and other people coming here looking for similar answers too. I don't see the negative point.

There are things need to be checked before removing sitewide links. If those links are built to manipulate rankings (which I see is the case) then removing them all at once would be much better since they don't carry much weight when it comes to link value.

So my advice is clean first the link profile by removing those low quality links and start a fresh link building campaign.

How many positions did they drop in rankings?

What about the anchor text of those 100K+ links from the PR4 site?

Do those links drive any traffic?

If the site tanked to page 5/6+ for most of the keywords then you don't have much to lose and thus get them removed unless they drive a lot of traffic obvious.

One of the best ways to find out if a site has a penalty is by building a few strong links and see what happens with the rankings for a few weeks, if nothing happens you can be pretty sure you got a penalty and likely caused by those sitewide links yes.

Not easy to check that because the site is a blog with hundreds of posts. The dropping has been noticed in search traffic.

The anchor texts are the title of each post since the link source is a syndication site.

No traffic at all coming from there.

So you basically have 2 bad sitewide links? I wouldn't sweat too much about it...
