Hello All,

I am working with the company and now we have this big project. Its a venues listing website and at first it will be focusing for Indian Audience.
Website will be going global in other county as well.
Can anyone recommend me best SEO practices for International website.

Structure of website, Navigation, Geo tags, Link building, sitemaps, canonicals,

    If you're looking to promote website in different-2 location, then create the sub-domain in website according to geo-location for example, if your website is xyz.com and you want to promote in india, australia and uk, than create sub-domain like in.xyz.com, au.xyz.com and uk.xyz.com and submit these sites in google webmaster tool and set the geo-targeted location according to sub-domain ( India, Australia and UK).

      SO the question arise here will google consider subdomain as separate domain? If yes Then I have to promote this subdomain from scratch.
      What if I create subdirectory ie xyz.com/in or xyz.com/us
      I am confuse in these two parameters.

      Why not to? Before it get worst in future I would like to know pros and cons of it. At the same time like to know others opinion on it.

      Mate, I will do that all above you have mentioned but first I have to make website SEO friendly so my question is mainly focused on on-page SEO.

        If you are talking about onpage then you should focus on title,it will be simple and catchy focusing the main purpose.Do not just stuff keyword.Then you should also look for a good meta description around 160-170 characters.

    Since you want to have an Internet presence why don't you just simply begin SEO for Google.com for global presence and Local SEO for Google India for your country.

    Ranking on Google India and the likes are quite different from ranking on Google.com.

        If you want to rank for other region you have to get backlinks from those region. SEO is not a rocket science, it will certainly take time and money.

        Just have it at the back of your mind and plan towards it.

    It's funny because I work for an ecommerce company and I actually went to San Francisco for a conference to learn about international SEO. You can PM me and we'll discuss. I actually setup about 110 powerpoint slide just on international SEO.

    You definitely want to add canonical tags. We mainly got the heading tags, meta description, title tags, product descriptions all translated using a console.

    We also had to create different site maps and make sure the custom error 404 page is translated as well. Try to automate it if you can but again, use the href lang.

    Low priority : rename the images.
    High priority : URL renaming.

    Let me know if you have any questions.

    A good site to refer to that does well with their international is asos.com.
    I'd try to aim for ccTLD if you guys have the funds. But you can also do sub dir.

    Ah, here are some notes that I've taken in the past

    Integrate SEO best practices regularly. Collaborate early on global content priorities to best leverage resources.

    URL naming convention and ccTLD. It could help through a click through rate perspective and increase in sales. If resources are an issue, we can go for subfolders since HM.com does that and performs really well.
    Fix all Canonicalization & Duplication issues.

    Create an href Alternate Language.

    Unique Localization. - Localization process consists of In-Country keyword research. Afterwards, make sure each keyword is mapped to prefer landing page. Content localized using keywords (content, video, images, links). Reviewed by Editorial, SEO and added to sitemaps. Last step is localized and optimized content goes live.

    Duplicate content
    Meta elements
    Header tags
    In-line CSS
    Alt attributes




    Translate the Meta descriptions accordingly for each desired country.
    Href alt Lang in XML Sitemaps
    Geo targeting is the method of determining the geolocation of a website visitor and delivering different content to that visitor based on his or her location such as country/region.
    Geo targeting challenge : many geo sites are outranked by the US or predominant language version sites. EX: US sites outrank Australia, india English sites, even if searched from those countries.
    Solution : Add Hreflang (language/country) annotations to XML sitemaps indicating to Google which country a specific page is targeting.

    Google is pretty good at recognizing languages, and showing the content at the relevant country search. However, it's always the best idea to get your lang codes right.

      You want to add this code.
      <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="nameofsitexxx.com" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="fr" href="nameofsitexxx.fr" />

      Fr stands for french. So whatever the code is add that. So es for spain, de for germany etc. etc.

    Domain Structure: ccTLD …. (.fr, .es, .ch, etc. etc.)
    Include hreflang tag…
    Markup - Hreflang attribute, avoid Duplicate Content
    On-page SEO
    Every on-page SEO principle should be applied across languages
    Sectioning Each Language

    If a user lands on site.FR (France), then make sure that all navigation and internal links point to other pages within .FR . Want to make sure you reinforce our focus on that particular language.
