High SERP with No Backlinks?

I've read one of the best ways to build quality backlinks is to analyze your competitors websites backlink profile.

So I google search my keyword, and type the top SERP websites into backlinkwatch com website.

It reads "Your website has not backlinks to report. -- Go on .. and build backlinks first "

How can the website be ranking so high without and backlinks? This is also the case for 3 other websites on the first page of Google.

    There could be a couple of reasons... However, if it is a solid keyword, the most likely reason is just that BacklinkWatch sucks.

    My guess is that the keyword is not worth going after. Unless I'm just competing in the wrong niches…. All the keywords I compete for have backlinks for the top 10 SERPS.

    Seriously, I can't figure out a single site ranking on to of google without backlinks, you can imagine a site ranking high without content, but not without backlinks.

      I do it all the time... backlinking is a very very small part of my SEO strategy now. A few years ago it was different of course. Obviously, it all depends on the strength of the competition but even in somewhat competitive niches it can still be done.

      Right Keywords and no backlinks will put your Content-less, PR 0 site on Page #1

      We have our site as a proof, just Google for: bing directory
      and look for our bingdirectory.org site on page #1

    Google use over 200 factors to rank websites in the first page, just keep in mind that links is not the only factor, sometimes you find top ranked sites without many links, but they play to other factors , links are just 1 from 200, it still 199 factor to get high rank. so building backlinks will never guaranteed 100% the top SERP rank.

      Great ! I don't know this fact that google use over 200 factors to rank websites.

    When using backlink watch - you might be looking at competitor's backlinks that could be a couple years old.

    Try Ahref, sometimes backlink watch not really accurate especially to count youtube video backlink. I mostly use Ahref.

    I wanted to compete for a keyword and did a bit of research only to find out that most of the top sites on the first page didn't have backlinks. And the top site on page 1 of the SERP (forgive me if my terminology is off) had no backlinks while Wikipedia was the third result.

    I was wondering the same thing. Thanks for asking this.

    The databases that a lot of link analysis tools use can be several months out of date. And often these tools do not find links that are 301 redirected from an old domain to a new domain.

    If you want to be high in Serp without backlinks than do PPC for relevant keyword in Google Adwords. Make your ppc campaign most effective and put good CPC for it. You will must on top in serps.
