Yes sir.. That's what can happen on oDesk or other freelancing websites. I have seen my share of work let downs from that site.

The best thing for you to do is to take it up with oDesk on their forums if you have the time. You might be able to get your money back if you plead right.

    All the best.

She did her job and you paid her for her time, BUT!!! she should have been honest with you and told you that niche is highly competitive

That niche is super competitive, so I wouldn't be surprised. I'm sure there are still a few out there, but you will have to find them yourself, since it will take alot of time

You get what you pay for. (if i had a dollar...)

I'm sure a really skilled Keyword researcher could get you a few. There are always keywords out there, and more and more popping up every single day.

Here is a keyword with 70 monthly exact searches (US and UK) that seems very easy to rank for. Plus, you know your visitors will be looking for a good diet, and you could sell them a clickbank one.

      "Yam Diet"

Yeh, took about 5 mins work and you got it free

Please dont PM me i dont offer a service, just trying to prove a point

Except that does not meet either criteria of 100+ searches a month (only 70) and Google results of 5K-10K (over 10K).

So if she found this keyword (and may have) it would be excluded based on his criteria.

Your keyword is a good example of why you need to be flexible in the criteria you use. His criteria is pretty tight for a competitive niche.

Good keywords there take some digging and thinking outside the numbers. For example yours is only 70 searches but very targeted and probably more valuable than some keywords that do meet his criteria.

You absolutely should not. Even OP said that it's ok, and he's just kind of cross-checking the result.

What kind of search in a competitive niche only has 5k-10k results in the English-speaking world? If you ask for something that doesn't exist, you may get "not possible" as an answer.

      Hi tristatemedia,

I can confirm that the weight loss niche is a highly saturated niche, so there will definitely not be any "ultra low competition keywords in the weight loss niche" at least not any that are highly relevant and have any detectable search volume.

Your best bet is to do some research on all of the common prefixes and suffixes that are used in the niche and build a keyword list using a permutation tool. You should be able to do some massive keyword lists.

You can then setup PPC campaigns to test the massive longtail. You might find a few keywords that will generate some traffic, and if you find enough of them, collectively they may add up to some decent traffic.

There's nothing to "discuss" at odesk - this was a poorly conceived project as the OP set tight search parameters.

In a competitive niche like health or weight loss or diet, etc - you aren't going to find keyword with no or little competition. What you learn is how competitive YOU must be to profit from those keywords.

Your search criteria was far too restrictive for the "results" numbers.

Cheap keyword research workers most of the time don't actually know what they are doing.
That's not right. A decent keyword search isn't rocket science and the results are what they are. Paying more doesn't give you results that don't exist. Logical thing to do now would be to hire the worker again and have her re-run the same keywords with results limited to 500,000 or one million instead of 10,000.

When you hire someone from a freelance site you must make sure you know how to do KW research yourself and provide them with instructions.

Based on the details you provided you do not have the skills to teach others so you know where to start.

HINT: SerpIQ or Moz Keyword competition finder brings you a whole end.

Forget about Traffic Travis, Longtail Pro or Market Samurai btw, they use the same type of metrics that you used, irrelevant ones.

Cheap keyword research workers most of the time don't actually know what they are doing.

They just have access to a keyword research tool and can get it to bring back results.

The results they bring back aren't any use to anyone but they don't know that and most of the people they are selling to don't know so either so they get away with selling bunk KWs.

I've tried a lot of sellers on Fiverr who offer niche and keyword research to see what they can come up with an 99% of the time it's garbage.

They send you low searched keywords that have tough competition and absolutely no buyer intent and try and tell you it's a golden keyword.

I believe a skilled researcher could find KWs for you but not a cheap worker.

I agree, he handcuffed her by setting up a strict criteria in such a competitive niche.

you say you know about keyword research yet this is your crieteria for success, lol.

how are you supposed to analyze competition this way?

I would also venture the thought that most good keywords in a super competitive niche such as weight loss may be largely gone.

However, of those keywords identified, an option is to target those keywords with the least competition of the highly competitive keywords and see what you can achieve with added strategies.

Otherwise your only option is to give up.

As a final thought, the language of today and words used to find something is changing so have you looked at any new trends that people may use with weight loss?

That's not how SERP competition works.

Why are you planning on competing with the guy that has a page ranked at position #87, etc...? Top of first page in the SERPs is your competition, the rest of it doesn't matter.

Does anyone have recommendations for Quality keyword research? Not that the provider the OP used was necessarily a low quality provider, but... How about some recommendations of good services?
