      That tells you nothing.

Purple giraffes with yellow elephant balls shows 30 million results. Do you really think that 30 million pages are competing for that keyword?

Also, there are lots of seo tools that lets you not only check competition for a particular keyword, but also run more detailed analysis of its ranking potential.

For example, you can use google keyword planner: https://adwords.google.com/ko/KeywordPlanner/Home
The Keyword Planner tells you NOTHING about the SEO competition. It only gives you an estimate of the competition among AdWords advertisers. Nothing else.

Every single keyword has the same number of competitors. Three. That's it. The top 3 sites are your competition.

No it cannot. It only provides the competition for AdWords advertisers. It tells you nothing about the level of competition for trying to rank a keyword.

Exactly, google adwords allows you to check only the advertisers competition

Google keyoword planner can be used for keyword research, but not for checking competition. You can check keyword competition taking a look at first page at google - it's the best way.

No software will really do that for you, SEO software can only provide data which you can then use for analysis.

As Ilias said, you need to look into the top 10 (or maybe a few more) competitors.

Analyze their websites (site structure, page titles, headings, page content), take a look at their backlinks, etc. Basically, you need to figure out what makes them rank in the top 10.

The sheer number of pages returned for a query won't tell you anything.

Yes, it depends on whether you are talking organic competition or PPC?
Googles Keyword Planner competition only refers to the number of people bidding for that keyword in adwords.

For testing organic competion on a keyword the main tool is your brain.
Google the keyword, check the top ten sites, their PR, DA & PA, age, number of backlinks, anchor text of their top backlinks, amount & quality of the content on the page, is it an inner page or home domain, authority site or little blog, how many YouTube videos are in the results, etc, etc.

Of course there are plenty of good keyword tools that can give you a rough idea of competitiveness, but nothing beats using your eyes and what's between your ears for figuring out if you can rank or not.

WordTracker actually offers a score for how competitive a keyword is. I would certainly recommend checking that tool out.
