SEO Question for WP

Hi all,

I'm not really an SEO expert although I know a little bit. My site is done all in WP and I have the Platinum SEO Pack plugin.

Do the keywords I put into the "Home Keywords" field serve as the meta keywords?

I'm pretty new to WP and hired someone else to do it for me as I didn't want to bother with learning WP at all. Everything I've ever designed myself is just straight HTML. I'm still learning how to optimize my WP site.

Other than plugging my keywords into the "Home Keywords" field, what else do I need to do to optimize my site for the search engines?

Also, my site is done in WP 2.7 and I'm getting a prompt to upgrade to WP 2.7.1. When you upgrade, does it change everything (i.e. mess up your design)? My WP theme is a custom design and I have specific plugins. Do I need to redo everything when I upgrade to the newest, latest version of WP?

I'd appreciate the insight.

    you may also want to set your template back to default theme temporarily, before you do upgrade.

    Custom themes can cause problems sometimes during upgrades.

      By default, 'home page' in WP refers to your blog posts page, so those keywords will serve as meta keywords for that page only. But you can also click the link to each post on the home page and it will display as a page with that single post on it. So you also need to set keywords for each post. I use All In One SEO and it lets you add the post page keywords on the post edit page and set the home page keywords on the plug-in's settings page. I imagine that yours will have something similar.

      A good SEO plug-in will also let you build good titles for your home page and each post page. For example, you could set the title for each post to include a keyword and the post title. You might also want to set titles and keywords for other pages, such as category and archive pages.

    Usually, during an upgrade you never ever replace or overwrite the wp-content subfolder in your WP installation. You replace all the files in the main/root directory and the wp-admin & wp-includes directories.

    All your themes and plugins, plus your uploaded images or other media files are all in the wp-content folder. Which means, if you don't touch it - the blog will look exactly as it was before the upgrade.

    Of course, just in case that something goes wrong, ALWAYS back up your database before an upgrade: all your content (posts, Pages etc.) are stored in the database, so beside the regular backup you should do one right before the upgrade.

    if you are using images in your blog make use of alt tag to fill it up with some keywords, images serve a lot in google. As far as SEO is concerned on page SEO is only 10% remaining 90% of SEO part is off page so focus more on off page than on page.
