Linking Dilemma

I previously changed the links on high PR domains to just 1 or 2, pointing to a category page (lists all posts in the category) or homepage. Traffic fell. A few days ago, I restored the page so 5-8 links were pointing to a site. Traffic picked up.

My dilemma is that this could look unnautral, particularly if the high PR domains only have a couple of posts to their name. I mean, both probably look unnatural to a certain extent, but I still don't know what to do.

What would be your advice?

    Yeah ok that certainly would look pretty unnatural.

    Here's my opinion - if you only have a couple of high PR domains that you are doing this on then I doubt you'll even be on Google's radar. I would act by simply adding more domains to your network and reducing the number of links on each.

    If, however, this is something that you are doing across a large number of domains then the risk is greater. I'd probably stop doing this and take the traffic hit for now.

    How diverse is the backlinks profile of your money site? Is it just high PR domains?

      I've got a few natural PR2's and 3's as well as a few of the inevitable PR n/a and 0's, but the rest I've created myself. No social bookmarking, article directories or any of that etc.

      Say that you have 10 high PR domains. Would you have 5 linking to 5-8 pages and 5 with just a link or two to the homepage? Or would this still be a bit too much?

      I should probably add that none of these PR domains link to each other. They're all hosted with different companies, and just point to the money site.

        My own personal approach is to only have 1 link to a money site per high PR domain. I'm not saying this is the right way and other people add multiple links (Becker at Source-Wave for instance and it's working well for him).

        I guess I want to raise as few flags as possible against my domains because I'm in it for the long term.

    You could easily link out to one or two other respectable wiki type sites on a page and that would make the pages look less suspicious as you aren't linking to just one site anymore. The biggest tell-tale sign of a blog that is being used in a linkwheel type scheme are the ones which only link to just one site.
