Submit to a range of websites with different Page Ranks?

I was wondering whether I should be submitting to only high PR websites or a range of different websites with varying Page Ranks?

I have manually submitted to about 20 over the last couple of days, mainly high Page Ranks 6+. Directories mostly, all looked ok but I don't want to do too much or do the wrong thing and get bashed by Google!

Any input is helpful

Man you've just got started, and already you have fallen down the rabbit hole of bad SEO. Stop buying into stupid hype and start using the resources you already have better. You'll find it hard to hit page 50 of Google for Insurance keywords, if you insist on using this kind of crap.

Crap links are still crap links, whether you manually or automatically submit them. They're still crap.

My man you have to at least share with Premium why they are crap links

PR does not go by sites but pages. Getting a link in a directory will give you the juice ON THAT PAGE. the home page could be a PR6 and the page your site is linked from a PR zero.

Best advice I could give to someone with 0 budget, but has years of experience and obvious contacts within the market.

Most of the suggestions I got were to create backlinks, which with my very limited SEO knowledge I have attempted to do.

Contacts and years of Life Insurance experience won't get me on page 1 on google. I know that for sure - finding out where and how I can get good SEO tips and suggestions will help a lot more!

Most of the link were from - 50 Places to get Free Backlinks « Freelance Web Designer. Maybe naive but they looked ok.

I know I need more content, which I am working on but surely every little helps!

I hope you get a good valentines surprise tonight then Kev!

Thanks for that Mike, I stupidly hadn't considered that!

You don't know that for sure. As you've said yourself, you're not experienced in SEO so how would you know? One thing I know for sure is with contacts in the Industry there is a far higher chance that they will also have contacts within the Industry. And some of them will have things like "websites" in the Industry, which is exactly where you want links from, relevant to the Industry.

Unfortunately we are not building a bonfire here. In SEO, every little does not help. In most cases it's quite the opposite to that. Backlinks are not counted as all being equal. There are good links and bad links and then some very bad links. Links that can have your site penalized.

Good links are from relevant pages within the market. To get them without having to pay for them, you are going to have to reach out to people.

There's no two ways about it.

Nothing stupid about it. Its just not your field. Ask anybody here and most will not know an annuity from a term life policy. You would if you are a life insurance agent

You don't know that for sure.
Ummm yes he does because he knows his field. Life insurance is a VERY competitive niche since an annualized commission up front can pay out $300-$2000+ for one single conversion.

You need some pretty serious links to be a big player there and even local and longtail can get competitive depending on the location. SEO networks are a factor in that niche and working contacts is good too but you still need some back ups in your link portfolio. Directories won't get you far though unless they are smaller business related link pages not buried away deep from the home page where most of the juice is most (not all) of the time.

Kevin - I know about life insurance and the way in which the UK market works. For example, a single click on Google for my main key words during working hours (10 until 7pm Monday to Friday) will cost anywhere from £40 - £80 pounds.

I may be able to get the odd backlink from contacts, but they will consider me competition and at that price for a click, they are unlikely to be giving me help. I will try, but it even with my limited knowledge of SEO, I know it's not going to crack page 1!

Also I've never said my budget is zero, but at that cost per click, my SEO budget isn't great. Which is why I'm attempting to do this myself, from scratch. You have to start somewhere!

Mike - I appreciate your constructive answers. I'm looking for help and advice and that's what you've given! Thanks :-)
