Article Marketing and Backlinks??

Why is that when I submit to like the top 20 article directories and I check my backlinks like 6 months later, only like backlinks from 3-4 of those directories show up in yahoo? When I go into some of these article directories (i.e. amazines and articledashboard) my article is listed there with their backlinks. The weird thing is that when I check another one of my sites for backlinks they might be there for those directories, but not for another site. It seems that backlinks from ezinearticles always get counted for any site. But when it comes to the rest of these directories it's a crap shoot if they will get counted or not.

Any ideas why this happens? Do you guys recommend a list of article directories to submit to that will always get it's backlink counted in yahoo (besides ezinearticles)?

I've seen this too. Keep in mind that just because Yahoo Site Explorer or Google don't show a backlink, it doesn't mean they aren't seen and being counted in your favor. Google is notorious for not showing all the backlinks, and I know Site Explorer, while better, isn't 100% either.

Having said that, take a bit of time and social bookmark all your articles. I'm not sold on the backlink power of social bookmarks, but I know they do a good job of getting pages indexed by the SE's. Another good option to ensure your articles all get noticed by the SE's is blog posting. I get everything indexed really fast that I blog about on my Ebay blog, for example. You don't have to spend much time on the post... just a quick 3-4 sentences about your new article with a link to it.

ezinearticles, articlesbase, articlealley are the best. If its the same article, then how many times do you expect it to get counted? Think about a sydicated news story that is on thousands of sites... The search engines have to draw the line somewhere. Thats where the whole duplicate content idea comes from. The search engines only attempt to count what they feel is the most relevant occurance of the content in question.

So then it would best to first submit my original to ezinearticles, and then spin the title and content for each of the different article directories in order to get the backlinks counted? So if I submit to 20 other directories I would need to spin it 20 times correct?

ill just butt in here, yup that is correct, if you are submitting the same content, then it will only be counted as one when the SE check their algorithms. Spin your content to atleast 30 percent before submitting it to another directory. Use an article spinner.

Using article marketing purely for backlinks is not a good use of your time, imo. Spend $5 and get Angela Edwards' backlinks packets here in the WSO section and get those links instead. Much more powerful use of your backlinking time. I think the first month's links are free.

A better use of article marketing is for the highly targeted and pre-sold traffic they generate. If you pick the right keywords, you can get an EZA article ranked on the first page at Google for that keyword without a lot of effort. That will generate just about the best possible traffic your site could hope to get, because the readers of your article were impressed and interested enough to click on thru to your site. Convert a decent % of them into customers and you're all set. Find more relevant keywords, rinse, repeat. That's how you make the most from your article marketing efforts - not from the backlinks.
