Advice wanted from the wise folk

Hi guys, as someone who hasn't quite jumped in the deep end of seo, I'd appreciate some input. I have two questions. I think I've found a strong keyword with 9,900 monthly searches, it has low competition, (just over 300,000 competing sites) I think the top ten are beatable.

Only problem is, the keyword may not be the most convertable out there if that makes sense.

Without giving it all away, it's about the diet of an animal. Is it true that if I can get tons of traffic, then a site can be monetised whatever - or can the specific keyword crush all that hope?

I was thinking of adsense and affiliate links to types of food and then onto other related items, but not sure if the traffic would be coming with the mindset to spend money.

Any thoughts much welcomed.

There are certainly keywords that do not convert well at all.

If you are unsure, the best way to test it is to run an AdWords campaign for awhile. You will lose money, but better to lose a few hundred dollars upfront than to lose hundreds more and tons of time on something that won't work.

1st of all the pet niche is very profitable. You can always go direct to vendors ads for high profits.

2nd yes, if you get tons of traffic - everything can be monetized. However, not everybody can monetize it the best way. But this one was pretty obvious, wasn't it?

3rd - as for the mindset - Try figuring out why are people searching for this keyword.

Also, just so you know, this has NOTHING to do with the level of competition.

I would be cautious about building a site around just one keyword.
OK as a basis but look to rank for other related long tail words as well.
