About expired domains

Hi there,

Let's say i buy a domain that has 2000 links point to it.

If i 301 that domain to my money site won't that ring some bells in Google?
If so, what's the proper way to do this?

    I would like to find out to the thing I don't understand is that a domain is only a word your hosting account is where all the data of the website is if you buy the domain how do you get the login details to the admin panel and how do you access it if you change the dns server to your own the domain would have no post

    It's a bit offtopic and i hope folks won't forget to answer the real question.

    But i'll try my best to explain.

    Webpages have PR. This PR varies, amoung other factors, with the number of links that are pointing to them. This webpages are "childs" of a domain page.

    So, if a domain expires, all the links on the web are pointing to something that don't exists anymore. If you redirect it to your website, the PR will flow to it. I'm obviously not a guru on this stuff.


    Now, i also have a few doubts about it. Let's say, my main website is about dogs. I buy an expired domain that had info about flowers and so, all the links pointing to it are about flowers. If i 301 that domain to my main site...it gets messy, no?

    I would also like information about doing this.

    Is there a limit as how many expired domains you can point at your own site before Google sees it as fishy?

    The short answer is that any scheme you do to try to artificially increase your PR or SERP is likely to hurt both. Google is wise to any of those old, overused, worn out techniques.

    Big brands build mini-sites for advertising campaigns all the time and quite often these get redirected to the main site when the campaign is over.

    Thus I don't think Google would go after 301s in isolation. If you had loads of them then maybe or if that was your only method of linking building but as part of an overall mix I wouldn't worry too much.

      If that really gave some penalty, people would buy an expired domain
      and 301 it to a competitor.

      I think people make too much about what google cares about.

      Getting back to that 301...if that domain was soooooooooo valuable,
      one would not 301 it, but fully develop it. You can link it to your old
      stuff.

      301 was never really meant for such stuff. Funny how SEO gurus have
      morphed mundane things into some seo-rabbit's foot.
