The short answer is that anything you do to try to artificially increase your PR or SERP is likely to hurt both.

Has nothing to do with PR, and who doesn't want to inflate SERP positions using their
      own websites?!?!!?

Have you been to amazon.com lately? Scroll down and just take a gander at
of all the website they own and interlink with...for the very reason you are
proposing. Ditto with wikipedia, ebay, yahoo, zap2it, go.com, gasbuddy,...

No website is an island in 2014. And they fully take advantage of their
      online empires.

I started building my online presence years ago and I tout that every chance
      I get.

Why would you not link up? Makes no sense, even same IP.

      What are people afraid of?

If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.

I've been doing this to rank pages for years, no problems. Use some self control & don't spam your sites.

I avoid doing this, simply because of Google's current algorithm state. If one site gets penalized for whatever reason, then I don't want the risk of multiple sites going down.

It doesn't matter if you use blackhat/whitehat/greenhat/salmonhat, any site can get penalized. You can get negative SEO'd by a competitor for $5 on Fiverr.

In my opinion, hedge your bets and keep your income sources mutually exclusive.
